1861 📚From Congress: After the Union Army suffered a series of military defeats in 1861 & 1862, Lincoln was pressured to use Blacks as soldiers. Once again Black soldiers came to the rescue of America. As whites enlistment declined, Congress passed the Confiscation Act on this day, which authorized the president to enlist Blacks in the Army. Lincoln still refused. Then in October 1861, after high white casualties Secretary of War Edwin Stanton authorized General Thomas W. Sherman to use all loyal persons offering their services for the defense of the Union
1870📚White conservatives suppressed Black vote & captured Tennessee legislature in election by assassinations & widespread violence. The Campaign effectively ended Radical Reconstruction in North Carolina
1942📚Southern Railway adopts a policy denying dining service to Black people
1965📚Voting Rights Bill which outlawed the requirement that would-be voters take literacy tests to qualify to register to vote is signed by Lyndon Johnson
