CHICO DeBARGE WENT ON TOUR WITH TYLER PERRY... AND ENDED UP GETTING STABBED?!

Baby, I thought Tyler Perry plays were supposed to have the drama ON THE STAGE.

Apparently somebody forgot to tell Philadelphia in 2003.

Because R&B singer Chico DeBarge once revealed that while touring with Tyler Perry's stage production of Why Did I Get Married?, he ended up in a real-life situation that made Madea's problems look like somebody forgot the potato salad.

And according to Chico...

HE GOT STABBED.

Not in the play.

Not a prop knife.

Not Tyler yelling, “CUT!”

STABBED-stabbed.

🎭 CHICO WAS ACTUALLY IN THE TYLER PERRY PLAY

This was before the Why Did I Get Married? movie that everybody remembers. Tyler Perry originally created it as a stage play, and Chico was part of the touring production in 2003.

Chico said the production was in Philadelphia, with Tyler Perry and Kelly Price among those associated with the show.

Everything was going fine until after the show when an associate asked Chico for a ride.

Now THIS is where Lady Red has to stop the story.

Because sometimes God sends you signs.

Sometimes your mama sends you signs.

And sometimes the sign is:

GO BACK TO THE HOTEL, CHICO.

😂😂😂

But nooooo.

Chico gave the man a ride.

👀 THEN SOMEBODY WANTED TO GO TO ANOTHER CLUB...

According to Chico's account, the associate had recently met a woman and wanted Chico to drive him to another club where she was.

Chico said when they arrived, something immediately felt wrong.

The woman was apparently showing a LOT of attention to Chico's associate, and Chico believed she was deliberately trying to make another man jealous.

And according to Chico, that other man wasn't exactly working the register at Walgreens.

Chico described the club as having a serious organized-crime atmosphere and claimed the woman's actual boyfriend was connected to the mob.

CHICO.

Baby.

When you walk into the club and your spirit says...

“This looks like GOODFELLAS.”

YOU DON'T ORDER A DRINK.

YOU ORDER AN UBER.

🤣🤣🤣

🥊 AND THEN ALL HELL BROKE LOOSE

Chico said a fight involving the woman started.

His associate intervened.

Other people jumped into the confrontation.

Chico tried to help his associate.

And somewhere during all that chaos...

CHICO GOT STABBED.

The wildest part?

He said he didn't initially realize he'd been stabbed.

Chico continued fighting until they escaped through an exit.

Then he started noticing something wasn't right.

Eventually he discovered he'd suffered a serious wound to his side near his kidney and lung.

Sir.

You started the evening doing Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married?

and finished it doing...

TYLER PERRY'S WHY DID I GO TO THAT DAMN CLUB?

And because this story apparently didn't have enough characters...

ENTER THE NFL.

Chico said an unidentified man associated with the Philadelphia Eagles happened to be nearby and knew how to respond to his injury.

According to Chico, the man helped keep him alert until the ambulance arrived.

At this point we've got:

Tyler Perry.

Kelly Price.

Chico DeBarge.

An alleged mob situation.

A stabbing.

AND THE PHILADELPHIA EAGLES.

Baby, who produced this episode?!

💔 BUT THERE'S A SERIOUS PART TO THIS STORY

Chico said the stabbing had consequences that lasted far beyond that night.

After being hospitalized, he was prescribed pain medication.

He later said he became addicted to the prescription medication, and that addiction eventually contributed to his use of harder drugs.

And that's where the story stops being funny.

The DeBarge family has endured well-documented struggles with addiction, incarceration and personal tragedy, and Chico has been unusually candid about his own battles.

So while we can laugh at how absolutely INSANE the circumstances sound...

the aftermath was very real for him.

But there's still a lesson here.

Sometimes your friend calls and says:

“Come pick me up. We gotta stop at this other club real quick.”

NO.

Sometimes you have to love your friends...

FROM THE HOTEL.

Because Chico went out there trying to help somebody and nearly lost his life.

Next time somebody says:

“It's just one quick stop...”
