ELIGIBLE HOOSIERS IMPACTED BY FLOODING MAY RECEIVE UP TO $5,000 IN EMERGENCY RELIEF

📍INDIANA residents affected by the devastating August 2026 storms and flooding may now be eligible for emergency financial assistance as families across the state begin the recovery process.

The State of Indiana has opened emergency assistance through its State Disaster Relief Fund, allowing eligible Hoosiers affected by the severe weather that began August 11 to apply for grants of up to $5,000 for certain immediate needs.

đź’° WHAT IS THE $5,000 ASSISTANCE?

The emergency grants are intended to help eligible individuals and families with essential items and disaster-related needs following the storms and flooding.

According to the Indiana Department of Homeland Security, eligible residents may qualify for up to $5,000 in emergency aid. The state specifically identifies needs such as clothing and uninsured medical devices among expenses that may qualify.

The $5,000 is a maximum award, not a guaranteed payment to every applicant. Eligibility and the amount of assistance will depend on the applicant's circumstances and qualifying losses.

🏠 WHO MAY QUALIFY?

The assistance is for Hoosiers affected by the recent severe weather and flooding in eligible counties where the State Disaster Relief Fund has been activated.

Residents should document their losses and report damage, even if they aren't yet certain what assistance they qualify for. State officials are also encouraging people affected by the flooding to report their damage through Indiana 211 as state and federal officials continue assessing the extent of the disaster.

🇺🇸 FEDERAL EMERGENCY DECLARATION APPROVED

On August 15, 2026, President Donald Trump approved an emergency declaration for Indiana following the severe storms and flooding.

The declaration allows FEMA to provide direct federal support for emergency response efforts. Indiana has also opened its State Disaster Relief Fund for eligible counties.

It's important to understand that the $5,000 state emergency grant and FEMA assistance are not necessarily the same thing. Additional federal disaster assistance could become available as damage assessments continue.

🏨 TEMPORARY HOUSING HELP IS ALSO AVAILABLE

Indiana has also announced temporary housing assistance for some people displaced by the flooding.

The program is designed to help eligible residents move from emergency shelters into temporary accommodations, including hotels, while longer-term recovery options are determined.

🥫 LOST FOOD PURCHASED WITH SNAP?

Hoosiers who receive SNAP benefits and lost food because of flooding or storm-related power outages may also be able to request replacement benefits.

Affected recipients can submit the required form to the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration through their benefits portal or at a local Division of Family Resources office.

đź“‹ WHAT SHOULD FLOOD VICTIMS DO NOW?

Residents affected by the disaster should photograph damage before cleaning or making repairs, save receipts for disaster-related expenses, keep insurance documentation, report their damage through 211, and check Indiana's official disaster-relief page for current eligibility and application information.

Because programs and eligible counties can change as damage assessments continue, residents should rely on official state information rather than social-media posts claiming everyone automatically receives $5,000.

đź”— WHERE TO APPLY AND GET OFFICIAL INFORMATION

Indiana has created an official resource page containing current disaster-relief programs and application information:

Residents can also review disaster declarations and State Disaster Relief Fund information directly through the Indiana Department of Homeland Security:

⚠️ WATCH FOR DISASTER SCAMS

The Indiana Attorney General's Office is warning residents that scammers may attempt to take advantage of people recovering from storm and flood damage. Be cautious about unsolicited contractors, requests for upfront payments, and anyone asking for sensitive financial information while claiming they can guarantee disaster assistance.

THE BOTTOM LINE

If you live in Indiana and were affected by the recent flooding, don't assume you don't qualify for assistance.

Eligible Hoosiers may receive up to $5,000 in emergency state assistance, and additional programs may be available for temporary housing, SNAP food replacement and other recovery needs.

Document your damage, report your losses and apply through official Indiana government channels as soon as possible.
