CHICAGO, listen.

We already had tornadoes, flooding, heat, power outages, food recalls and Mother Nature generally acting like she has an unpaid bill with Illinois.

NOW THE DAMN MOSQUITOES GOT INVOLVED.

Chicago health officials announced Tuesday that a person has died from West Nile virus, marking Illinois first reported West Nile-related death of 2026. Chicago also confirmed its first two human cases of the year, including the person who died. Officials have not released identifying information about the deceased.

And before somebody says:

“It's just a mosquito bite.”

NOPE.

That's exactly why we're talking about it.

🦟 THEM LITTLE MFS CAN ACTUALLY MAKE YOU SICK

West Nile virus is primarily transmitted to people through the bite of an infected mosquito.

The strange part is that most infected people don't develop symptoms at all. Roughly one in five may develop symptoms including fever, headache, body aches, joint pain or rash.

But in rare cases, West Nile can become much more serious and affect the nervous system.

Severe symptoms can include high fever, stiff neck, confusion, muscle weakness, paralysis, meningitis or encephalitis, and severe infections can cause permanent neurological damage or death.

So this ain't:

“Put some alcohol on that mosquito bite and quit scratching.”

This can become a serious medical situation.

👵🏾 OLDER ADULTS NEED TO BE ESPECIALLY CAREFUL

People over 60 and people with weakened immune systems are at greater risk of developing severe illness from West Nile.

So check on Mama.

Check on Daddy.

Check on Grandma.

Check on Grandpa.

And check on that uncle who insists on sitting outside from 6 p.m. until midnight in a white T-shirt talking about:

“Mosquitoes don't really bother me.”

YES THE HELL THEY DO, UNCLE JUNIOR.

GO IN THE HOUSE. 😭

🌧️ AND ALL THIS DAMN RAIN DIDN'T HELP

Chicago Public Health Commissioner Dr. Garth Walker said 2026 has brought Chicago its rainiest summer in years, creating plenty of opportunities for mosquitoes to breed.

Which makes perfect sense.

Because what do mosquitoes LOVE?

STANDING WATER.

Buckets.

Birdbaths.

Flowerpots.

Old tires.

Wading pools.

Clogged areas around the yard.

Basically, if water has been sitting around your house long enough to start paying rent, DUMP THAT SHIT OUT.

🚨 COOK COUNTY ALREADY HAD FOUR CASES

This isn't appearing out of nowhere.

Just days before Chicago announced its cases and death, the Cook County Department of Public Health reported four human cases in suburban Cook County, all involving adults.

Health officials classified the risk of human West Nile infection as high for the week ending August 22.

And here's something else worth paying attention to:

In 2025, Illinois recorded 150 human West Nile cases and 10 deaths. In suburban Cook County alone, officials reported 44 cases and four deaths last year.

So NO.

This isn't one mosquito somewhere in Illinois who woke up and chose violence.

West Nile is already circulating.

🧴 PUT THE DAMN BUG SPRAY ON

Health officials recommend what they call “Fight the Bite.”

That means using an EPA-registered insect repellent, wearing protective clothing when appropriate, repairing holes in window and door screens, getting rid of standing water and taking extra precautions around dawn and dusk when mosquitoes can be especially active.

And please follow the directions on whatever repellent you're using, especially when applying it to children.

Because I already know somebody's auntie is about to pull out some homemade concoction involving:

Vicks, vinegar, Skin So Soft, lemon juice, peppermint oil, rubbing alcohol and a prayer.

WE HAVE SCIENCE.

🏠 WALK AROUND YOUR HOUSE THIS WEEK

Seriously.

Check the backyard.

Check the gutters.

Check flowerpots.

Check buckets.

Check kiddie pools.

Check anything collecting rainwater.

If you've got stagnant water sitting around for more than a week, Illinois health officials recommend reporting locations such as roadside ditches, flooded yards or similar problem areas to your local health department or municipality, which may be able to treat the water for mosquito larvae.

Because apparently in 2026 we have reached the point where we need to tell mosquitoes:

“YOU DON'T LIVE HERE. GET YOUR LITTLE BLOOD-SUCKING ASS OFF MY PROPERTY.”

But underneath the jokes, someone has died.

A Chicago family is grieving, and that makes this warning very real.

West Nile isn't something to panic over, but it is something to take seriously, particularly for older adults and people at greater risk of severe illness.

So enjoy these last warm Chicago nights.

Sit on the porch.

Fire up the grill.

Enjoy the backyard.

Just don't serve yourself as the damn entrée.

SPRAY YOURSELF. DUMP THE STANDING WATER. FIX THE SCREENS. AND FIGHT THE BITE.
