Jill Scott was officially inducted into Billboard’s R&B Hall of Fame during the 2026 R&B/Hip-Hop Power Players celebration in New York City on September 9.

And my first question is:

WHAT TOOK Y’ALL SO DAMN LONG?! 😂

Because Jill Scott didn't become R&B royalty Wednesday night. Baby, some of us have been knowing this since “Who Is Jill Scott?”

WHO IS JILL SCOTT?!

WE KNOW WHO SHE IS NOW! 😂

This woman has spent nearly three decades giving us soul music that will have you cooking dinner, cleaning the house, remembering an ex you ain't talked to since 2004 and suddenly standing in the kitchen wondering:

“You know what... maybe I WAS too hard on that man.” 😭😂

🌻 AND JILL STILL DOESN'T TAKE IT FOR GRANTED

During the celebration, Jill talked about how surprised and grateful she was to receive the honor.

After all these years, all those records, all those stages and all those people who know every syllable of her songs, she said recognition like this can still shock her.

And THAT is beautiful.

Because we're talking about a woman whose career stretches from her early songwriting work connected to The Roots' “You Got Me” to her landmark debut album Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1, Grammy wins, acting roles and decades of live performances.

And she's STILL making new music.

Her latest era includes To Whom This May Concern, proving Jill isn't accepting a lifetime achievement award and disappearing somewhere with a glass of wine.

No ma'am.

SHE STILL GOT WORK TO DO.

This part makes the story even sweeter.

The Roots were inducted into Billboard's Hip-Hop Hall of Fame during the same celebration.

Now THAT is a full-circle Philly moment.

Jill reflected on being on the road with The Roots years ago, learning the touring business and growing as an artist.

Fast-forward nearly 30 years and everybody is standing around getting inducted into Hall of Fames.

Baby, that's not a reunion.

Jill Scott has never needed to chase whatever sound happened to be popular that week.

She created her own lane.

And that VOICE.

Jill can sing one sentence about somebody walking through the kitchen and somehow you'll be sitting there thinking:

“DAMN... I need to reevaluate my entire relationship.” 😂

That's a gift.
