š PRINCEāS PURPLE RAINĀ IS HEADED TO BROADWAY... BABY, SOMEBODY FIND THE PURPLE COAT!
Updated: Aug 25

Just when you thought Purple RainĀ had already conquered everything it possibly could...
The album? Classic.
The movie? Classic.
The motorcycle? Iconic.
That purple coat? Probably has better name recognition than half the people currently making music. š
And now Prince's legendary Purple RainĀ is officially packing up the Revolution and heading to BROADWAY.
Yes, Broadway.
The stage adaptation of Prince's 1984 film and album will begin previews at New York City's Majestic Theatre on March 12, 2027, with the official Broadway opening scheduled for April 12, 2027. Tickets are expected to go on sale this September.
ā SOMEBODY BETTER HAVE A SERIOUS FOG MACHINE
The Broadway production will bring the story of The KidĀ back to life, following the young Minneapolis musician as he battles family problems, romance, rivalry and his climb toward stardom.
Basically...
Purple Rain without being able to yell āCUT!ā when somebody messes up.Ā š
And they're not playing around with the music either.
The production is expected to feature more than 20 Prince songs, including āWhen Doves Cry,ā āI Would Die 4 U,ā āTake Me with Uā and āThe Beautiful Ones.ā
Translation?
If you go to this show and somebody doesn't eventually scream āLET'S GO CRAZY!ā, demand your money back immediately.
š BUT WHO IS PLAYING PRINCE?!
Now HERE is the question.
Because you can put somebody in purple.
You can give them the hair.
You can hand them the guitar.
You can put heels on them.
But PRINCE?!
Baby, that's a different assignment.
Casting for the Broadway production hasn't been announced yet.
And whoever gets cast as The Kid better start stretching NOW.
Because Prince wasn't just standing there singing.
That man was singing, dancing, playing guitar, dropping to the floor, getting back up in heels and looking at everybody like THEYĀ were the ones doing too much. š
š THEY BROUGHT SOME SERIOUS PEOPLE IN FOR THIS ONE
The Broadway version will be directed by Tony-nominated director Saheem Ali, with a book by Peter Duchan and choreography from Emmy winner Ebony Williams, whose credits include additional choreography for Beyoncé's Renaissance World Tour.
Tony Award winner Jason Michael WebbĀ leads the music team, while longtime Prince collaborators Bobby Z and Morris HayesĀ are serving as Prince music advisers.
Okay.
NOW WE'RE LISTENING.
Because if you're going to touch Purple Rain, you better have some people in the room who understand that this isn't just another jukebox musical.
Prince fans will inspect this production like somebody's auntie checking the potato salad at the family reunion.
WHO MADE THIS?
WHAT DID YOU PUT IN IT?
AND WHY DOES IT TASTE DIFFERENT?!Ā š
š AND THE SHOW HAS ALREADY HAD A TEST RUN
This isn't starting from scratch.
An earlier version of the musical premiered in Minneapolis in 2025, Prince's hometown. Since that run, the Broadway production has undergone significant creative changes, including a new director and book writer.
Which means somebody apparently looked at the first version and said:
āOkay... everybody come back in the conference room. We need to talk.āĀ š
And you know what?
GOOD.
Because Prince fans don't play about Purple Rain.
Get it RIGHT.
ā 42 YEARS LATER AND IT'S STILL RAINING PURPLE
The Broadway announcement came 42 years to the day after the original Purple RainĀ movie premiered.
That film and soundtrack helped transform Prince into a global superstar, and decades later we're STILL talking about The Kid, Morris, Apollonia and Lake Minnetonka.
And now a whole new generation is about to discover something the rest of us already knew:
When Prince said Purple Rain, apparently he meant FOREVER.Ā šā
š£ļø WHAT DO YOU THINK?
Would you pay to see Purple RainĀ on Broadway, or is Prince one of those artists you believe nobody should even ATTEMPT to recreate onstage?
And here's the bigger question:
WHO could possibly play The Kid and actually make Prince fans happy?Ā š
