Now here's why people are shocked...

For years, these gummies sat on convenience store shelves right next to energy drinks and snacks. Many people assumed if they were being sold openly, they had to be legal.

Not anymore.

Under the new law, many products containing intoxicating hemp-derived THC, such as Delta-8 THC, Delta-10 THC, THC-O, and other similar cannabinoids, are now treated as controlled substances in Texas.

That means someone caught with certain products could face the same level of criminal charges the state uses for drugs like heroin or methamphetamine, depending on the circumstances and amount involved.

Supporters of the law say it closes a loophole that allowed intoxicating products to be sold with little oversight and helps protect children and public safety.
