TODAY WE CELEBRATE OUR SENIORS: THEIR WISDOM, THEIR STORIES & THEIR LEGACY 👑

Today, August 21, is National Senior Citizens Day, a day dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the older adults who have helped build our families, communities and country.

And here at 730 BOOM Radio, we're giving our seniors their flowers TODAY. 💐

National Senior Citizens Day was officially proclaimed in 1988 by President Ronald Reagan, who designated August 21 as a day to honor older Americans for their accomplishments and contributions, while also drawing attention to issues affecting their well-being.

In his proclamation, Reagan noted that older Americans have achieved much throughout their lives and continue to contribute their experience, knowledge and leadership to society.

❤️ WHY THIS DAY MATTERS

Being a senior doesn't mean somebody's story is finished.

Our seniors are business owners, veterans, teachers, entertainers, parents, grandparents, community leaders, caregivers, artists, activists and mentors.

They carry stories that aren't written in history books.

They remember neighborhoods before the expressways came through.

They remember music when you had to actually GO BUY THE RECORD. 😂

They remember when you couldn't Google the answer because Google wasn't even somebody's idea yet.

And many of the freedoms and opportunities younger generations enjoy today exist because somebody older than us fought, sacrificed, worked and refused to quit.

That's worth celebrating.

🎉 HOW CAN YOU CELEBRATE NATIONAL SENIOR CITIZENS DAY?

It doesn't have to cost a dime.

Call an older relative you haven't spoken to lately. Visit a senior family member or neighbor. Take somebody to lunch. Help with groceries or errands. Sit down and ask them about their childhood. Look through old photographs together. Record some of their family stories so they aren't lost.

And here's a BIG one:

LISTEN TO THEM.

Ask Grandma what life was like when she was 20.

Ask Grandpa about his first job.

Ask your auntie what your mama was REALLY like growing up. 👀😂

Actually, be careful with that last one. You might learn too much.

But seriously, one of the greatest gifts you can give an older person is your time.

👑 AND DON'T FORGET SENIORS WHO MAY BE ALONE

Today is also a good opportunity to check on an older neighbor or someone living alone.

A quick phone call, a meal, helping with yard work or simply spending an hour talking can mean more than you realize.

You can also contact a local senior center, assisted-living community or community organization and ask about opportunities to volunteer.

And celebrating seniors shouldn't end when August 21 does.

RESPECT DOESN'T HAVE AN EXPIRATION DATE.

Music has a beautiful way of connecting generations.

Some of the records we call classics today were brand-new songs when our seniors first heard them.

They danced to them.

Fell in love to them.

Raised families to them.

Cleaned the whole house on Saturday morning to them. 😂

And now those same songs are being discovered by their grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

That's legacy.
