Because somebody please explain to me why Brown Sugar Bakery, a Black-owned business that's been holding it DOWN on 75th Street, has now been broken into TWICE IN LESS THAN A MONTH.

TWICE!

According to Chicago police, shortly before 3 a.m. Tuesday, four males broke the front window of Brown Sugar Bakery in the 300 block of East 75th Street, grabbed a cash register and took off in a gray sedan. Police said no one was in custody as of Tuesday evening.

And here's the part that REALLY pissed me off.

THE DAMN REGISTER DIDN'T EVEN HAVE ANY MONEY IN IT.

😭😡

So y'all smashed somebody's window...

Broke into a business...

Stole equipment they now have to replace...

Traumatized a business owner...

Risked getting arrested...

Jumped back in the getaway car...

And sped off into the night with...

A BIG ASS EMPTY BOX?!

Congratulations.

NOW YOU BROKE AND STUPID.

I know crime ain't funny, but WHAT WAS THE BUSINESS PLAN HERE?!

Y'all get back to wherever y'all went, slam that register on the table like you just pulled off Ocean's Eleven, pop it open and...

NOT A DAMN DOLLAR.

Not a twenty.

Not a ten.

Not even somebody's emergency five-dollar bill tucked underneath the drawer.

Meanwhile, owner Stephanie Hart has to replace a shattered storefront window and parts of her point-of-sale system because somebody decided destroying a neighborhood business was worth whatever they THOUGHT was inside that register. Hart said this was the bakery's second break-in in a month, with the previous one occurring July 28.

And THIS is what makes me mad.

This isn't some giant corporation where somebody in another state presses a button and sends over another register.

This is somebody's BUSINESS.

Somebody's employees.

Somebody's livelihood.

Somebody who gets up every day, turns those lights on, pays people, pays bills, buys supplies, serves customers and contributes to OUR community.

And y'all out here busting the windows out?

FOR WHAT?!

Brown Sugar Bakery is a Black-owned, woman-owned Chicago business at 328 E. 75th Street, known across the city for its cakes and desserts.

That's OUR neighborhood institution.

People go there for birthdays.

Weddings.

Graduations.

Baby showers.

Family celebrations.

Those caramel cakes have probably been in more Chicago family pictures than some people's cousins. 😂

And this is how we treat businesses trying to stay in our neighborhoods?

NAW.

I'm sick of it.

And I'm sick of hearing “businesses need to invest in the community” while some people in the community are making businesses wonder why the hell they should stay.

You know what Stephanie Hart said after somebody broke into her business for the SECOND time?

“I ain't going nowhere. I love 75th Street.”

THAT'S the part.

Because she could say forget it.

She could pack up.

She could take her business somewhere else.

But she's saying I'M STAYING.

And instead of making that harder for her, Chicago ought to make sure she knows:

WE WANT YOU HERE.

So if you want to help Brown Sugar Bakery, don't just share the story and type “that's terrible” underneath it.

GO BUY SOMETHING.

Hart specifically encouraged people who want to help to support the bakery by placing orders. Despite the break-in, Brown Sugar Bakery planned to open Tuesday at its regular 10 a.m. time.

Buy the cake.

Buy the cupcakes.

Buy the cobbler.

Hell, buy something you can't pronounce and figure it out when you get home. 😂

Because supporting a Black-owned neighborhood business after somebody tried to tear it down?

THAT'S HOW THE COMMUNITY ANSWERS BACK.

And to the four people police say were involved...

If y'all really drove away celebrating over an empty cash register?

I hope when y'all opened that mf and saw NOTHING inside, the silence in that car was DEAFENING.

Police say detectives are investigating, and CPD said the same crew was suspected of hitting two additional businesses on East Hyde Park Boulevard minutes later.

Enough.

Stop tearing up the businesses that serve our neighborhoods.

Stop making small-business owners pay for somebody else's foolishness.

Stop destroying people's property because you THINK there's some quick money behind the glass.

Keep baking.

Keep that door open.

Chicago, go show them some LOVE.

Because apparently somebody stole the register...
