🎤 WILL SMITH AND DJ JAZZY JEFF'S HIP-HOP RISE GETTING A NEW SERIES! FROM WEST PHILLY TO GLOBAL SUPERSTARDOM

730 BOOM RADIO | RED ALERT™ | ENTERTAINMENT NEWS | OCTOBER 10, 2026
Before Will Smith became one of Hollywood's biggest movie stars, before The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and before the blockbuster films, there was a young rapper from West Philadelphia with a microphone, a dream, and a DJ who knew exactly what to do with two turntables!
And now, that legendary hip-hop journey is getting its own television series!
Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff's rise to fame will inspire a brand-new scripted series titled 215.
The project was announced October 6, 2026, by Smith's Westbrook Studios and Canada's Malar Group, with additional entertainment coverage continuing through October 10.
🎬 WHAT IS 215 ABOUT?
The series takes its name from Philadelphia's famous 215 area code and will transport viewers back to the late 1980s, when hip-hop was exploding and two young men from West Philly were determined to make their mark.
The story will follow a teenage rapper, his talented DJ partner, and the friends who helped them chase a recording contract while navigating friendships, money, loyalty, and the pressures of newfound fame.
And we're not just talking about the television version of the Fresh Prince.
We're talking about the REAL musical foundation that helped launch Will Smith's entertainment empire!
🎧 HOW IT ALL STARTED
Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff, born Jeffrey Townes, first connected at a West Philadelphia house party in 1985.
Jeff needed someone to rock the microphone, and Smith stepped up.
That spontaneous connection helped create one of hip-hop's most successful early crossover acts.
Together, DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince delivered records that became part of hip-hop history, including:
“Girls Ain't Nothing but Trouble”
“Parents Just Don't Understand”
“A Nightmare on My Street”
“Summertime”
“Boom! Shake the Room”
Their chemistry was undeniable.
Will brought the storytelling, personality, and humor. Jazzy Jeff brought the turntable skills, production talent, and musical foundation.
Together, they helped introduce hip-hop to audiences far beyond its original neighborhoods.
🏆 THEY MADE GRAMMY HISTORY!
In 1989, DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince won the first Grammy Award presented for Best Rap Performance for “Parents Just Don't Understand.”
But here's the part younger fans might not know.
The rap category wasn't included in the televised Grammy ceremony that year.
So Smith and Jazzy Jeff joined other hip-hop artists in boycotting the broadcast.
Imagine helping make history in a musical genre and then watching the industry decide your category wasn't important enough for television!
Their protest became an important moment in hip-hop's fight for mainstream recognition.
The duo went on to earn another Grammy for “Summertime,” one of the most recognizable summer anthems in R&B and hip-hop history.
📺 BEFORE BEL-AIR, THERE WAS PHILLY!
When The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air premiered in 1990, millions of viewers were introduced to Will Smith as a television star.
But hip-hop fans already knew who he was!
DJ Jazzy Jeff also became a familiar face on the sitcom, playing Jazz, the friend who regularly found himself getting thrown out of Uncle Phil's house.
Now, 215 aims to explore the years that came before the mansion, the sitcom success, and the Hollywood fame.
WHEN WILL THE SERIES PREMIERE?
As of October 2026, 215 remains in development.
No official cast, network, streaming platform, or premiere date has been announced.
The project is being developed as a scripted drama inspired by the duo's early lives, not a documentary.
