CHICAGO... We now know more about the frightening gun incident aboard a school bus outside Minnie Miñoso Academy in Bridgeport, and Lady Red has ONE question:

HOW IN THE HELL DID A 12-YEAR-OLD GET ACCESS TO YOUR LOADED GUN ON A SCHOOL BUS?!

Chicago police say 22-year-old Steven Dixon Jr. has been charged after a 12-year-old boy found a firearm inside an unattended bag on the bus Monday afternoon.

FOX 32 identifies Dixon as a school bus aide. CBS Chicago also describes him as a bus aide, although police have not publicly explained his connection to the transportation company.

The incident happened just before 2:30 p.m. Monday outside Minnie Miñoso Academy in the 3500 block of South Wallace Street.

Police say the boy took the gun from the unattended bag and fired one round that struck a bus window.

And here's the part that makes this even more disturbing:

OTHER STUDENTS WERE ON THE BUS.

Thankfully, nobody was injured.

🚨 POLICE SAY THE AIDE TOOK THE GUN AND LEFT

According to police, after the shot was fired, Dixon allegedly retrieved the gun and the bag and left the scene.

CBS Chicago reports, citing a police source, that Dixon turned himself in approximately three to four hours later.

He now faces one felony firearm charge, along with misdemeanor charges including three counts of child endangerment and one count of reckless conduct. He was set to appear in court Wednesday for a detention hearing.

The school went into a soft lockdown, and students were released in waves. School officials told families that everyone was safe and that the firearm did not enter the school grounds.

I'm not about to sit here and make a 12-year-old child the villain of this story.

The adult had the gun.

The adult allegedly left the bag unattended.

And somehow, a child was able to reach inside that bag, get his hands on a firearm and PULL THE TRIGGER.

That bullet hit a window.

THANK GOD IT HIT A WINDOW.

Because change that angle by a few inches and we could be writing an entirely different story today.

And there were other children on that bus.

That's the part that has me HOT.

If you choose to carry a gun around children, then securing that weapon isn't a suggestion. It isn't something you do when it's convenient.

IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY.

A child should never be able to unzip your bag and find a loaded firearm sitting there like it's a pack of damn fruit snacks.

And police say after the gun went off, the man allegedly grabbed the bag and gun and LEFT?!

Sir.

The gun already went BOOM.

We are past the part where you casually gather your belongings.

😡 THIS COULD HAVE BEEN SOMEBODY'S BABY

Imagine being a parent waiting for your child to come home and finding out a gun was fired on their school bus.

One mother told the Chicago Sun-Times that her 12-year-old son, who has autism, was frightened after the incident and didn't want to get back on the school bus.

That's the aftermath people don't always think about.

Nobody got shot, and we should be grateful for that.

But children were still on a bus when a gun went off.

Parents were terrified.

And a 12-year-old now has to live with the fact that he picked up a gun and fired it.

So don't tell me, “Well, nobody got hurt.”

We got LUCKY.

LUCK IS NOT A GUN-SAFETY PLAN.

Lock your guns up.

Secure your weapons.

And if you're going to carry a firearm around children, act like the grown-ass adult who's supposed to be responsible for it.

Because our children should NEVER have to pay the price for an adult's carelessness.
