📺 A DIFFERENT WORLD IS COMING BACK... AND BABY, HILLMAN IS ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS AGAIN!

THIS ISN’T JUST ANOTHER OLD SHOW THEY DUSTED OFF BECAUSE HOLLYWOOD RAN OUT OF IDEAS.

For a whole generation of Black kids, A Different World was THE show.

We watched Dwayne Wayne flip those glasses up.

We watched Whitley Gilbert walk around Hillman talking like somebody's rich auntie had dropped her off personally.

We watched Ron hustle.

Freddie protest EVERYTHING.

And Mr. Gaines somehow knew everybody's business while serving food at The Pit.

But underneath all the comedy, relationships and foolishness, A Different World did something much bigger.

IT MADE BLACK KIDS WANT TO GO TO COLLEGE.

And I was one of them.

Before social media showed us every dorm room, campus tour and college homecoming on earth, A Different World gave Black kids a weekly look at Black college life.

Hillman College wasn't even real, but baby...

WE WERE READY TO APPLY. 😭🎓

The original series showed us young Black people studying, falling in love, protesting, making mistakes, dealing with racism, talking politics, choosing careers and figuring out who the hell they were going to become.

College wasn't portrayed as some place where we were visitors.

WE BELONGED THERE.

And that mattered.

Kadeem Hardison says people still approach him and tell him they attended HBCUs because of A Different World.

That's not just television influence.

THAT'S CULTURAL IMPACT.

🎓 AND NOW WE'RE GOING BACK TO HILLMAN

Netflix is bringing A Different World back with a sequel series premiering September 24, 2026.

And they're not pretending the original characters never existed.

The new story centers on Deborah Wayne, played by Tony Award winner Maleah Joi Moon.

And whose child is Deborah?

DWAYNE WAYNE AND WHITLEY GILBERT'S DAUGHTER!

WAIT A DAMN MINUTE.

So Dwayne and Whitley survived all that foolishness, got married, raised a whole child...

AND NOW THEIR BABY IS GOING TO HILLMAN?!

That's the kind of generational Black television continuity I can get behind.

The new cast also includes Alijah Kai, Chibuikem Uche, Cornell Young IV, Jordan Aaron Hall and Kennedi Reece.

And Netflix isn't completely kicking us old folks out of the dorm either.

THE ORIGINAL CREW IS COMING BACK.

Jasmine Guy and Kadeem Hardison are returning as Whitley and Dwayne, with Darryl M. Bell, Cree Summer and Charnele Brown among the familiar faces returning to Hillman.

BABY...

If Ron Johnson walks into The Pit still owing somebody money...

I'M DONE.

🎶 AND THEN THEY WENT AND GOT BRANDY?!

Now THIS is where y'all started fooling with my childhood.

Because the new A Different World also has Brandy singing a new rendition of the show's iconic theme song.

BRANDY?!

THE VOCAL BIBLE?!

So you're telling me you're bringing back Hillman...

Dwayne and Whitley are back...

Their daughter is going to Hillman...

And then you're going to have BRANDY singing us through the opening credits?!

NETFLIX, YOU BETTER NOT HAVE ME IN HERE CRYING BEFORE THE FIRST COMMERCIAL THAT AIN'T EVEN THERE.

And Brandy is actually a perfect choice because this show meant something to her generation too.

A Different World wasn't background television.

WE SCHEDULED OUR ASSES AROUND IT.

There was no pause button.

No DVR.

No “I'll watch it tomorrow.”

If you missed Thursday night television...

THAT WAS BETWEEN YOU AND GOD.

🖤 BUT THIS IS WHY I'M REALLY EXCITED

I'm not excited simply because something from my childhood is coming back.

I'm excited because another generation of Black kids gets to see Hillman.

The original A Different World aired from 1987 to 1993, and its influence on how Black college life was represented on television became enormous.

Now the sequel is actually being filmed in Atlanta, and Jasmine Guy says roughly 70% of the extras came from local HBCUs including Spelman, Morehouse and Clark Atlanta.

NOW THAT'S HOW YOU DO IT.

Don't just make a show about HBCU culture.

PUT HBCU STUDENTS TO WORK MAKING THE DAMN SHOW. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

And I know some people are already saying:

“LEAVE THE CLASSICS ALONE!”

I understand.

Because Hollywood has rebooted some things that should have remained peacefully buried.

😂

But Kadeem Hardison made a point I actually agree with: our generation already had our Different World. Let these kids have theirs. 

EXACTLY.

They're not taking Dwayne Wayne away from us.

They're not repossessing Whitley's accent.

The original episodes aren't evaporating from the earth.

THIS GENERATION DESERVES THEIR OWN HILLMAN.

Because somewhere there's a Black teenager who has never considered an HBCU.

Maybe they'll watch this show.

See the friendships.

See the campus.

See Black professors.

See Black excellence.

See Black kids being brilliant, ridiculous, ambitious, confused and HUMAN.

And maybe they'll think:

“I WANT THAT.”

That's what the original did for so many of us.

It made college feel possible.

It made Black college life look exciting.

And most importantly...

IT SHOWED US OURSELVES THERE.

So yes, I'll be watching when the new A Different World premieres September 24 on Netflix.

And Netflix...

I'm giving y'all a chance.

But understand something.

You are fooling around with BLACK TELEVISION HOLY GROUND now.

Get the writing right.

Get the chemistry right.

Let Brandy SANG that theme.

And somebody PLEASE make sure Dwayne still has at least one pair of flip-up glasses somewhere in that house.

Because when that theme song starts...

👀 NOW... ABOUT THE ELEPHANT IN THE HILLMAN CLASSROOM

We can't talk about A Different World coming back without mentioning one complicated piece of its history.

Bill Cosby created A Different World.

Yep. THAT Bill Cosby.

And that's where this gets interesting.

After the allegations against Cosby, The Cosby Show was pulled from several television outlets, and Hollywood largely distanced itself from him. But A Different World became something much bigger than one man's name.

The show was shaped by an entire group of Black actors, writers, producers and creatives, with Debbie Allen playing a HUGE role in turning Hillman into the HBCU world so many of us fell in love with.

So now, decades later, we have an interesting situation:

THE COSBY LEGACY GOT COMPLICATED... BUT HILLMAN SURVIVED.

And maybe that's because A Different World stopped belonging to one creator a long time ago.

It belonged to the cast.

It belonged to the writers.

It belonged to the HBCU community.

And eventually...

IT BELONGED TO US. 🎓🖤

Now Netflix is bringing that world to another generation.

And THAT opens up a whole other conversation:

Can we celebrate the cultural impact of A Different World while separating it from the man who originally created it?
