BLACK EXCELLENCE | BOOKS | CULTURE
While everybody else is arguing on social media about who's dating who, who's beefing with who, and who unfollowed somebody, a Black woman just collected a major literary honor!
And we're going to give her some recognition over here at 730 BOOM!
Award-winning author Tayari Jones has won the 2026 Kirkus Prize for Fiction, earning a $50,000 award for her novel Kin.
The winners were announced October 7 during a ceremony in New York City, with news of the honor continuing to make headlines October 8.
And this is no small achievement.
The Kirkus Prize is one of the most prestigious and financially significant literary awards in the United States.
WHAT IS KIN ABOUT?
Kin explores the lives of two Black women whose friendship begins in childhood in Louisiana.
Both grow up without their mothers, sharing an emotional bond shaped by loss, family circumstances, and the challenges of growing up in the American South.
As their lives move in different directions, the novel examines the lasting influence of friendship, social inequality, identity, and the choices people make while searching for belonging.
The book explores how two people can begin life with similar experiences but encounter very different opportunities and obstacles.
And that's something a whole lot of people can relate to.
Sometimes the people who know us best are the people who knew us before we had anything.
Before the degrees.
Before the money.
Before the careers.
Before life started pulling everybody in different directions.
WHO IS TAYARI JONES?
Jones is already a highly respected literary voice.
She is the author of several novels, including Leaving Atlanta, The Untelling, Silver Sparrow, and An American Marriage.
Her 2018 novel An American Marriage received widespread acclaim, became an Oprah's Book Club selection, and won the Women's Prize for Fiction.
The book examined marriage, injustice, and the devastating consequences of wrongful incarceration.
Jones is also a professor of creative writing at Emory University.
Her work frequently explores Black family relationships, identity, love, class, and the impact of social institutions on ordinary people's lives.
With Kin, she continues that tradition.
A $50,000 LITERARY HONOR
The Kirkus Prize recognizes outstanding books in three categories: fiction, nonfiction, and young readers' literature.
Each winner receives $50,000.
The 2026 winners also included Pamela Colloff for nonfiction and Elizabeth Acevedo for young readers' literature.
The award recognizes exceptional literary achievement, with winners selected from eligible books that received starred reviews from Kirkus Reviews.
For Jones, the honor adds another major accomplishment to an already distinguished career.
🎙️ LADY RED'S TAKE: WE NEED TO CELEBRATE OUR AUTHORS TOO!
Now THIS is what I'm talking about!
A Black woman writes a powerful book, wins a prestigious award, and takes home FIFTY THOUSAND DOLLARS!
YES, MA'AM!
Because we celebrate our singers.
We celebrate our athletes.
We celebrate our actors.
But what about the people writing the stories?
What about the authors documenting our experiences, our relationships, our struggles, and our history?
Those stories matter too!
And I especially love seeing Black women recognized for telling stories centered on Black women's lives.
Because for generations, our stories have been overlooked, dismissed, rewritten, or told through somebody else's perspective.
And now we're writing them ourselves.
Not asking permission.
Not waiting for somebody else to validate our experiences.
Just telling the stories.
And collecting the awards!
So congratulations to Tayari Jones.
May this recognition inspire more people to read, write, publish, and support Black literature.
And parents, put some books in those kids' hands!
They need to know our greatness extends far beyond music and sports.
