BREAKING: MAN DEAD, WOMAN HURT IN SHOOTING AT OAKBROOK CENTER

OAK BROOK, IL — 730 BOOM BREAKING NEWS

A Wednesday afternoon trip to Oakbrook Center turned deadly after gunfire erupted in a parking lot outside the suburban shopping mall, leaving one man dead and one woman injured.

Oak Brook police say officers responded shortly after 12:30 p.m. on September 30 to the parking lot near the L.L.Bean store. Investigators say two vehicles carrying a total of five people had parked near one another before a confrontation occurred and at least one person opened fire. NBC Chicago

THREE PEOPLE TAKEN INTO CUSTODY

Police say three people were taken into custody after investigators used license-plate-reader technology while tracking a vehicle that left the scene.

As of Wednesday evening, authorities had not announced charges or publicly identified the people detained, so it is important not to label any of them as the shooter until police establish who did what. ABC7 Chicago

Oak Brook police described the shooting as an isolated incident and said there was no continuing active threat to the public. The mall remained open while officers maintained a heavy presence in and around the property. Chicago Sun-Times

And that's the part that hits differently.

People go to the mall to buy clothes, grab something to eat, return that thing they KNOW they shouldn't have bought and argue with themselves about whether they really need another pair of shoes.

Nobody should have to wonder whether they're going to encounter gunfire in a shopping-center parking lot.

Tonight, one family is learning that someone they love isn't coming home.

Another person is recovering from being shot.

Whatever disagreement happened in that parking lot, a life is now gone, and several families will live with what happened there long after the police tape comes down.

The investigation remains active, and details could change as Oak Brook police determine exactly what led to the confrontation and whether criminal charges will be filed.
