📍CHICAGO, IL — Knucklehead News... because apparently “rest in peace” was NOT in the plans.

Now listen. There are stories where Lady Red can find the joke immediately.

Then there are stories where you have to stare at the screen for a minute and say:

“Ma’am... your MAMA?!”

Federal prosecutors have charged 72-year-old Eva Bratcher with allegedly collecting more than $21,000 in Social Security and SNAP benefits while her deceased mother’s body was hidden inside a freezer in the garage of their Chicago home.

And yes. You read every single word of that correctly.

Her mother, Regina Michalski, was 96 years old when she died in March 2021.

Authorities previously alleged that about a week after her mother died, Bratcher purchased a freezer and concealed her body inside it. Regina remained there for nearly two years, until police discovered her in February 2023 after Bratcher’s estranged daughter requested a well-being check on her grandmother.

BABY...

Your daughter had to call the police to find out where HER GRANDMAMA was.

That is where the sarcasm stops for a minute, because underneath the bizarre details is something incredibly sad.

Regina was somebody’s mother. Somebody’s grandmother. A 96-year-old woman whose family deserved the opportunity to know she had died, mourn her properly and lay her to rest with dignity.

Instead, prosecutors say people were told she was in a nursing home.

But now comes the part that has Lady Red looking over the top of her glasses.

Federal prosecutors allege that during those two years, Bratcher assumed her mother’s identity, collected her Social Security benefits and used her SNAP benefits. Authorities also accuse her of using another Social Security number to obtain additional SNAP benefits.

The alleged total?

$21,402.

Ma’am.

You put Mama next to the frozen peas for TWENTY-ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS?!

Not $21 million.

Not $2.1 million.

Twenty-one thousand dollars.

Listen, I have complained about grocery prices too, but this is NOT what anybody meant when they said, “Put Mama’s food in the freezer.”

😭😭😭

Bratcher had already faced state charges over concealing her mother’s death. In 2023, she pleaded guilty to concealing a death and possessing a fraudulent ID.

Now the federal government has entered the chat.

She has been indicted on federal charges including theft of government property and fraud, misrepresentation or misuse of Social Security benefits.

And if the allegations are proven, this story becomes even sadder because those programs exist to help elderly, disabled and financially vulnerable people survive. Money fraudulently taken from those programs ultimately comes out of a system other families genuinely depend on.

But the person Lady Red keeps coming back to is Regina.

Ninety-six years on this earth deserved a better ending than a freezer in a garage.

So yes, this story is bizarre enough for Knucklehead News.

Yes, Lady Red has questions.

And YES, one of those questions is:

WHO WAS STILL OPENING THAT FREEZER?!

Because baby, once I know somebody's mama is in there, I don't even want the ice trays.

But behind every crazy headline is a real human being, and Regina Michalski deserves to be remembered as more than the woman found inside a freezer.

Rest peacefully, Ms. Regina. 🕊️

As for everybody else...

Please bury your people.

We cannot believe that sentence needed to be typed in 2026.
