And NOW we gotta add MEASLES back to the list?!

Pennsylvania health officials have confirmed that two unvaccinated residents of Lancaster County died after contracting measles, marking the state's first measles-related deaths in roughly 35 years. They are also reportedly the first measles deaths announced in the United States in 2026. 

And this isn't some little isolated situation.

As of August 20, the CDC had reported 2,777 confirmed measles cases nationwide in 2026, already more than the 2,289 cases reported during all of 2025. Pennsylvania alone has reported 393 cases across 28 counties.

And now somebody done reached into the historical disease closet and pulled MEASLES back out.

Because I distinctly remember measles being one of those things we learned about and thought, Whew, glad somebody handled THAT.

Apparently measles said:

“Y'all thought I retired?” 😭

But this part isn't funny: both Pennsylvania residents who died were reportedly unvaccinated. Health officials say two doses of the MMR vaccine provide about 97% protection against measles. Measles can cause serious complications, including pneumonia and brain swelling, and can be fatal.

And this thing is EXTREMELY contagious. Early symptoms can look like a regular respiratory illness: fever, cough, runny nose and red or watery eyes, followed by the characteristic rash. Symptoms may not appear until 7 to 21 days after exposure.

So no, everybody with a cough doesn't suddenly have measles. 😂 But with cases this high, this is one of those times when it's worth knowing what you're looking for and checking your family's vaccination records.

Because between recalls, storms, outages and diseases we thought belonged in the history books...
