ICE to Sheriff Tom Dart: “Serve These Subpoenas.” Cook County: “Now Hold On…” 👀

Chicago, come get your people because Washington and Cook County are squaring up over immigration again, and this time Sheriff Tom Dart is standing right in the middle of it.

According to reporting, ICE sent letters to Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart demanding that his office serve federal immigration subpoenas. And apparently ICE didn't send the friendly little “when you get a chance” version either.

Federal officials reportedly warned that refusing to cooperate could potentially expose officials to criminal consequences.

BABY.

So basically the letter arrived with:

“Please see attached... and govern yourself accordingly.” 😭

Now, why is this such a big deal?

Cook County has long had policies limiting local law enforcement's participation in federal immigration enforcement. The county's sanctuary protections are designed to keep local agencies from essentially becoming an extension of ICE.

And Sheriff Dart's office has previously maintained that it follows county law and applicable legal requirements regarding immigration enforcement.

But the Trump administration has been aggressively challenging sanctuary jurisdictions, arguing that local governments shouldn't be able to refuse cooperation with federal immigration authorities.

So now ICE is basically saying:

“We have federal subpoenas.”

Cook County is saying:

“And we have county law.”

And the lawyers are somewhere rubbing their hands together like:

“Looks like we're working overtime.” 😂

🚨 BUT HERE'S WHERE LADY RED TAKES THE JOKES OFF FOR A SECOND

This isn't just politicians arguing.

There are real families and real communities watching this fight closely because whatever happens could determine how much Cook County law enforcement participates in federal immigration enforcement.

It also raises a much bigger legal question:

Where does federal immigration authority end and local government authority begin?

Because baby, everybody can't be the boss.

Somebody eventually has to ask the courts:

“Okay... WHOSE RULES ARE WE ACTUALLY FOLLOWING?”

And that may be exactly where this thing is headed.
