🚨 POLICE SAY MAN JUMPED FROM MOVING CTA RED LINE TRAIN BEFORE BEING STRUCK

CHICAGO: What started as reports of a person found dead on the CTA Red Line tracks has now taken a tragic turn, as Chicago police released more information about what they believe happened.

Authorities say a man jumped from a moving Red Line train near the 69th Street station Monday afternoon.

And unfortunately, what happened next was fatal.

According to police, after jumping from the train, the man landed on the electrified third rail and became incapacitated. He was then struck by another approaching train.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

🚇 RED LINE SERVICE DISRUPTED

The incident caused a major interruption for South Side riders as CTA temporarily suspended Red Line service between Garfield and 95th Street while police, firefighters and emergency crews responded.

Service eventually resumed, but riders experienced delays following the incident.

Now listen, Chicago.

We complain about the CTA every other Tuesday. The train late. Somebody smoking. Somebody performing a full concert nobody bought tickets for. Somebody having an argument with an invisible opponent.

But this ain't one of those stories.

Somebody lost their life.

Whatever happened in the moments before that man left that moving train, this ended with a family somewhere receiving a phone call nobody ever wants to get.

I don't know what was going through this man's mind, and neither does anybody scrolling through Facebook trying to solve the case from their couch.

So we're not doing that.

We're not diagnosing him.

We're not assuming why he jumped.

And we're definitely not turning somebody's final moments into entertainment.

What we can say is that Chicago police now believe they know how the man ended up on those tracks, which answers one of the biggest questions surrounding the original report.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.

A moving train is never something to play with. The tracks are never a shortcut. And that third rail does exactly what the warning signs say it does.
