😳SOOOO... AMERICA IS FULL FOR REFUGEES, BUT WE FOUND SOME EXTRA SEATS FOR WHITE SOUTH AFRICANS?! CHIIILE...

The Trump administration has sent Congress a new refugee proposal for fiscal year 2027, and one part is already getting major attention: the administration plans to cap refugee admissions at 17,500 people for the next 12 months, with those admissions going “primarily” to Afrikaners from South Africa, according to the congressional notice reviewed by Reuters.

And yes, we're talking about white South Africans.

So naturally, Lady Red has questions. 👀

Because America has spent the last couple of years having a LOUD conversation about immigration, borders, asylum seekers and how many people this country can afford to take in.

Now suddenly...

“Welcome! Do you need help with your bags?” 😭

WHY AFRIKANERS?

President Trump has argued that Afrikaners are experiencing racial persecution and discrimination in South Africa. Earlier this year, he formally declared what his administration called an emergency refugee situation involving Afrikaners and raised the fiscal 2026 refugee ceiling from 7,500 to 17,500 to accommodate additional admissions.

South Africa's government strongly disputes the broader portrayal that white South Africans are being systematically persecuted, and the issue has become another source of tension between Washington and Pretoria.

That's an important distinction because we're dealing with two competing positions, not an established finding that every Afrikaner qualifies as a persecuted refugee.

Applicants still have to qualify through the U.S. refugee process.

💰 AND HOW MUCH IS THIS EXPECTED TO COST?

Here comes another number that's going to have folks talking.

According to the State Department notice reported by Reuters, refugee resettlement under the proposed 17,500-person ceiling is expected to cost approximately $500 MILLION. 

Half.

A.

Billion.

Dollars.

Lady Red just wants everybody to remember that number the next time somebody gets on television yelling:

“WE CAN'T AFFORD IT!”

Because apparently the national wallet doesn't just open or close.

It has a guest list. 😭

👀 AND THIS ISN'T JUST SOMETHING THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT DOING

Afrikaners have already been entering the United States through this policy.

According to State Department data cited by Reuters, all but three of the nearly 3,000 refugees admitted during the current fiscal year through August were South Africans. For comparison, the United States admitted more than 100,000 refugees from dozens of countries during fiscal year 2024 under the Biden administration.

That's why refugee organizations are challenging the administration's priorities.

Global Refuge President and CEO Krish O'Mara Vignarajah criticized a refugee system focused overwhelmingly on one population while people fleeing conflicts and persecution elsewhere receive far fewer opportunities for admission.

The Trump administration sees it differently. The State Department told Congress it expects Afrikaner refugees to assimilate successfully while limiting costs to American taxpayers.

CHIIIIILE. 😭

So lemme understand America's new seating arrangement.

For refugees around the world:

“Sorry, we're limiting capacity.”

But then somebody walks up speaking Afrikaans:

“WAIT! We might have a table opening up.” 😭

Now before Facebook starts fighting, the issue isn't whether an individual white South African could legitimately face persecution. Refugee claims are supposed to be evaluated based on circumstances and eligibility.

The BIGGER question is why one population is being given such extraordinary priority while the overall refugee ceiling remains historically tiny.

And THAT is a legitimate policy question.

Because if America says its refugee program exists to protect people escaping persecution, then Americans can reasonably ask:

What standards determine who gets through that door?

The administration has provided its answer.

Refugee advocates disagree.

South Africa disputes Trump's characterization of conditions there.

And now Congress has the administration's new 17,500-person proposal sitting in front of it.
