President Donald Trump is doubling down on his promise to send Americans $5,000 checks, and this time he's saying there's no āmaybeā about it.
Speaking to reporters Sunday, Trump declared:
āThe $5,000 is going to happen 100 percent.ā
Sir.
You cannot put $5,000Ā and 100 PERCENTĀ in the same sentence around broke people and expect us to remain calm. š
Because somebody just opened the Amazon app.
Somebody put rims in a shopping cart.
And somebody already told ComEd:
āBaby, give me until that Trump check hits.ā
NOT SO FAST.
šµ WHAT EXACTLY IS TRUMP PROMISING?
Trump first announced what he's calling the āTrump DividendāĀ at the Republican midterm convention in Dallas.
His proposal is pretty simple on the surface:
If Republicans maintain control of both the House and Senate in November, Trump says every adult American citizen would receive $5,000. He has also said the money would have to be spent inside the United States.
Trump says the country is bringing in so much money that the government can afford it.
But here's where Lady Red pulls out the calculator.
There are roughly 240 to 245 million adult U.S. citizens.
Multiply that by $5,000 and we're talking about somewhere around:
š° $1.2 TRILLION.
TRILLION.
With a T.
That's not āeverybody throw $20 in.ā
That's COUNTRY money. š
š SO WHERE IS THE $1.2 TRILLION COMING FROM?
That's the part that still isn't settled.
Vice President JD Vance has suggested tariff revenue could help pay for the checks. Administration officials have floated other sources of money as well.
But current tariff revenue doesn't come anywhere close to covering approximately $1.2 trillion in payments.
And then we have another little problem:
CONGRESS.
Despite Trump's confidence that these checks are coming, federal spending generally requires congressional authorization.
House Speaker Mike Johnson has acknowledged Congress would have to deal with the proposal, while Senate Majority Leader John Thune said there isn't even a concrete proposal before lawmakers yet.
And some Republicans are already looking at that trillion-dollar price tag like:

š³ļø AND THERE'S ANOTHER CATCH
Trump isn't promising to mail everybody $5,000 tomorrow.
His promise is explicitly tied to the November midterm elections.
He says the dividend happens if Republicans retain the House ANDĀ Senate.
So despite that ā100 percentāĀ statement, there are actually several things standing between Americans and that money:
Republicans have to maintain control of Congress.
Congress has to approve the spending.
Lawmakers have to determine exactly who qualifies.
And somebody still has to explain where more than ONE TRILLION DOLLARSĀ is coming from.
So please...
