🚨 69 CARS HIT IN ONE MORNING: THIEVES GO ON WINDOW-SMASHING SPREE ON CHICAGO’S SOUTH SIDE

Imagine waking up Saturday morning, walking out to your car and seeing shattered glass everywhere.

Now imagine looking down the parking lot and realizing you’re definitely not the only one.

Chicago police are investigating after at least 69 vehicles were damaged in two parking lots on the South Side early Saturday, September 19, including 41 vehicles in an Illinois Institute of Technology parking lot in Bronzeville. 

🚗 41 CARS HIT FIRST

Police say the first incident happened shortly before 2:15 a.m. near East 33rd and South State streets.

According to investigators, four people arrived in a black SUV, entered the parking lot and shattered windows on 41 vehicles before leaving.

And here's the part that has people scratching their heads: police said it wasn't immediately clear whether anything was actually stolen from the vehicles. Some victims told reporters their cars had been rummaged through, but nothing appeared to be missing.

Illinois Tech says its Public Safety officers responded alongside CPD and that the university has since increased patrols around campus parking areas. 

😳 THEN ANOTHER 28 CARS

About an hour later, police were called to another parking lot in the 3200 block of South King Drive.

This time, investigators say three suspects traveling in a dark-colored Jeep SUV damaged at least 28 vehicles.

Again, police had not determined whether anything was stolen.

That brings the official count to at least:

41 + 28 = 69 DAMAGED VEHICLES.

That is not somebody checking door handles looking for loose change. That is an entire parking lot waking up to a glass company’s dream and everybody else's nightmare.

Because if somebody breaks into 69 cars and reportedly leaves some of the valuables sitting there, what exactly was the mission?

And how do multiple people move through parking lots smashing dozens of windows before anybody catches them?

Residents and victims are asking similar questions about security. One victim at the IIT lot questioned how so many vehicles could be hit despite security patrols, while residents near the second location expressed frustration that their complex also has security.

For the people whose cars were damaged, there's nothing funny about the bill waiting on the other side of this. Even when nothing is stolen, you've still got broken windows, possible interior damage, insurance deductibles and a morning ruined before breakfast.

Area One detectives are investigating both incidents. No arrests had been announced in the latest reports. 

And Chicago, apparently we have to say this again:

YOUR CAR IS NOT A PIÑATA. STOP BUSTING PEOPLE'S WINDOWS.
