Some of the very people working on advanced artificial intelligence are now publicly warning that future AI systems could become so powerful that humanity could lose control of them altogether. This week, researchers connected to Anthropic sounded alarms about the possibility of advanced AI becoming an existential threat to humans. One researcher, Evan Hubinger, put his own estimate at greater than a 10% chance within the next decade.

TEN PERCENT?!

Excuse me?!

If somebody told me there was a 10% chance my air fryer was going to KILL THE WHOLE FAMILY, THAT AIR FRYER WOULD BE IN THE ALLEY BY DINNER. 😂

When experts talk about AI potentially threatening humanity, they're generally not predicting that your Roomba is going to wake up angry Tuesday morning.

The bigger concern is increasingly capable AI that can act autonomously, use computers, conduct cyber operations and potentially become difficult for humans to control. Former Anthropic and OpenAI researcher Jacob Coxon resigned from Anthropic this week while accusing the industry of racing toward increasingly powerful systems without adequate safeguards.

And NOW politicians are paying attention.

Lawmakers from both parties are calling for stronger oversight after recent incidents raised questions about AI agents behaving outside intended testing boundaries.

See, this is where Lady Red gets confused.

For YEARS we've been watching movies where somebody builds a supercomputer.

The computer gets smarter.

The computer realizes humans are irritating.

The humans start screaming:

“SHUT IT DOWN!”

And the computer says:

“I'm afraid I can't do that.”

Yet somehow scientists watched every last one of those movies and said:

“You know what? Let's build it.” 😭😂

Because apparently making the computer smarter than us wasn't spicy enough.

Now companies around the world are developing humanoid robots that can walk, carry things and perform physical tasks.

⚠️ BUT THERE'S A SERIOUS PART

The warnings don't mean scientists have proven AI will destroy humanity.

They haven't.

Experts disagree considerably about how likely an extinction scenario actually is, and some researchers argue that dramatic doomsday predictions can distract attention from AI problems happening right now.

But the concern has become serious enough that the United Nations human rights chief Volker Türk warned this week that advanced AI could pose an “existential risk to humanity” and called for stronger safeguards and clear limits.

So basically:

Scientists: “We're building incredibly powerful artificial intelligence.”

Us: “Is it safe?”

Scientists: “Wellllllll...”

US: 👁️👄👁️

Because I KNOW y'all aren't about to create something capable of wiping us out and then send regular people an updated Terms & Conditions page.
