Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spent his final years talking not only about civil rights, but about economic justice. Decades later, his youngest daughter, Dr. Bernice A. King, is putting some banking power behind that conversation.
Redemption Bank, the Black-owned bank co-founded by King and businessman Ashley D. Bell, has officially launched the Bank King Card, its first debit-card program. And this isn't being marketed as just another piece of plastic for your wallet.
The card is designed so opening an account can also help fund programs supporting low-income mothers and their children.
💰 WAIT... BERNICE KING HAS A BANK?
Well, she's not sitting behind the teller window counting twenties. 😂
King helped build the effort behind Redemption Bank and currently serves as its Senior Vice President for Impact Banking. Ashley D. Bell serves as executive chairman and CEO. The institution grew out of the acquisition of Utah's Holladay Bank & Trust by a Black-led investor group.
The acquisition was finalized in 2025, establishing what was described as the first Black-owned bank in the Western United States. Redemption serves customers nationwide.
Now the bank is expanding its consumer offerings with the Bank King Card.
And yes, somebody was cooking with that name.
Bank King.
Banking.
King.
Okay, I see what y'all did there. 😂
✊🏾 THE CARD HAS A PURPOSE
The Bank King Card officially launched on Juneteenth, June 19, 2026.
For every Bank King Card account opened, Redemption Bank says it will make a contribution to its Redemption Foundation. Those funds are intended to support organizations operating guaranteed-income programs for mothers with children living in government-subsidized housing.
One planned beneficiary is the Georgia Resilience and Opportunity Fund, whose In Her Hands initiative provides unrestricted cash assistance to women across Georgia.
And there's an important detail:
Cardholders aren't being charged an additional donation.
The bank says customers don't have to spend extra money for the program. Redemption Bank determines a fixed contribution based on new accounts opened rather than calculating donations from individual purchases.
🏦 AND THIS IS A REAL BANK, NOT AN APP PRETENDING TO BE ONE
That distinction matters.
There's been an explosion of financial apps and fintech companies offering debit cards, but Redemption Bank is an actual banking institution.
The bank says its mission includes expanding access to capital, entrepreneurship, homeownership and wealth-building opportunities, particularly in communities that historically haven't received equal access to financial services.
The Bank King debit card is available now, while the bank has also announced plans for a Bank King credit card with an interest rate capped at 12%.
🔴 LADY RED SAYS...
Now THIS caught my attention.
Because we've spent generations talking about supporting Black businesses, building Black wealth and keeping more money circulating through our communities.
Well...
You can't keep saying:
“We need more Black-owned banks!”
Then when somebody builds one, everybody suddenly gets quiet and goes right back to Bank of Whoever. 😭
And I particularly like that this isn't being sold as:
“Buy more stuff and we'll donate some money.”
They're basically saying:
You already need somewhere to bank. Why not make that decision do some work in the community too?
That's a different conversation.
And there's something historically fitting about Bernice King being involved.
Dr. King wasn't only fighting over where Black people could sit.
Toward the end of his life, he was increasingly talking about whether people could afford the damn bill once they sat down.
Jobs. Wages. Housing. Poverty. Economic security.
That's part of the King legacy too.
So now his daughter is helping take that conversation from the march...
to the Mastercard. 💳
And I ain't mad at it.
One thing I would tell everybody: don't open ANY financial account simply because a famous name is attached to it. Read the account agreement, fees, ATM policies, deposit insurance information and other terms first, and decide whether the account actually makes financial sense for you.
That's not hating.
That's Bank King responsibly. 👑😂
People interested in the debit card can get information or open an account directly through Redemption Bank's official website.
