Bud Billiken Royal Court Crowned in Chicago

A new group of young Chicago leaders is ready to represent one of the city’s most treasured traditions.

The Bud Billiken Parade’s 2026 Royal Court was officially crowned Sunday during the annual coronation ceremony. This year marks the 77th anniversary of the Royal Court tradition, which began in 1949.

Children between the ages of 11 and 13 competed for the titles of king, queen, crown prince, crown princess, prince and princess. Contestants submitted an essay and video explaining three qualities of a good leader and why those qualities matter.

The highest-scoring students earned positions on the court. Their responsibilities extend beyond wearing crowns and appearing in the parade—they will participate in community service, youth outreach and other activities throughout the coming year.

The Royal Court will also ride on its own float, welcoming spectators during the 97th annual Bud Billiken Parade on Saturday, August 8.

Since 1929, the Bud Billiken Parade has celebrated Chicago’s Black youth, culture and education while encouraging families to prepare for a new school year. The free South Side tradition is recognized as the largest African American parade in the country.

This year’s newly crowned court will now carry that legacy forward—showing Chicago that leadership can begin at any age.
