CHICAGO’S OWN DEON COLE IS BACK WITH AVERAGE JOE AND SEASON 2 IS ALREADY LIKE... WTF IS ABOUT TO HAPPEN NEXT?! 😂

If you've been waiting for Average Joe to come back, pull up a chair because Season 2 is finally here, and apparently this show still has absolutely NO interest in letting viewers relax.

Paramount+ officially brought the series back on August 19, nearly three years after the first season premiered. The new season has eight episodes, with the first two dropping together and new episodes following every Wednesday.

And we're not about to give you a play-by-play of what's happening.

NO SPOILERS OVER HERE.

Because honestly, spoiling Average Joe would defeat half the damn purpose.

The beauty of this show is sitting there thinking:

“Okay, I know where they're going with this...”

Five minutes later:

NO TF YOU DON'T. 😂

😂 COMEDY, DRAMA AND SUSPENSE WALK INTO A BAR...

Trying to describe Average Joe to somebody who has never watched it is interesting.

Is it a comedy?

Yep.

Drama?

Yep.

Crime?

Definitely.

Suspense?

BABY, KEEP WATCHING.

Paramount itself categorizes the series as drama, dramedy and suspense, while promoting it as an action-comedy thriller.

That mixture is exactly what makes it work.

One minute you're laughing.

Then suddenly:

👀

Then:

“Wait... what?”

Then:

😳

Then somebody says or does something ridiculous and you're laughing again.

This show will not pick a lane.

AND WE DON'T WANT IT TO.

It's television gumbo. Throw that comedy in there. Give us some drama. Sprinkle in some danger. Add a little WTF seasoning and PUT THE LID ON IT. 😂

🌍 SEASON 2 GOT A PASSPORT

We won't tell you WHY everything happens, but we can safely tell you where much of it happens.

CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA.

The new season takes Joe Washington and the crew to Cape Town, and the show was actually filmed there.

Paramount's official description promises a bigger international adventure involving powerful enemies, criminals and situations that become increasingly chaotic.

That's ALL you're getting from us.

Because the whole point is watching this thing unfold yourself.

What we CAN say is that Cape Town gives the series a completely different visual feel.

Beautiful scenery.

Bigger scale.

New faces.

Same group of people who apparently cannot go anywhere without something going completely left.

🎭 THE CREW IS BACK

Deon Cole returns as Joe Washington.

Malcolm Barrett is back as Leon Montgomery.

Cynthia Kaye McWilliams returns as Cathy Montgomery.

And Michael Trucco is back as Touch.

New additions include South African actress Katlego Lebogang as Imani and Hakeem Kae-Kazim as Sipho.

But there is ONE returning character we need to discuss separately.

Because...

😂 CATHY IS EVERY AROUND-THE-WAY GIRL WHO AIN'T TAKING NO SHIT

Cathy.

Cynthia Kaye McWilliams has one of those characters where you don't need to explain her to people who know women like her.

You KNOW Cathy.

Somebody in your family is Cathy.

Somebody on your block is Cathy.

You might BE Cathy. 😂

She's tough.

She's ambitious.

She's street-smart.

She's not waiting around for everybody else to figure out what needs to happen.

And most importantly:

CATHY AIN'T TAKING NO SHIT.

McWilliams recently explained that she doesn't see Cathy as a “bad girl.” She describes her as ambitious, someone comfortable embracing power and self-interest without apologizing for it.

EXACTLY.

Cathy isn't sitting around asking:

“Do you think I should?”

Baby, by the time you answer...

CATHY DONE ALREADY DID IT.

😂 AND THEN THERE'S HER HUSBAND LEON...

We love Leon.

We really do.

BUT LEON IS THE EXACT OPPOSITE OF HIS WIFE.

Cathy is ready.

Leon is processing.

Cathy has assessed the situation.

Leon has a question.

Cathy has already figured out Plan A, B and C.

Leon:

“Wait... what are we doing?”

SIR, KEEP UP.

Cathy is definitely the tougher one in this marriage.

Leon is a little slower to get there.

And that makes their chemistry HILARIOUS because they give you that classic male-female relationship where the woman is looking at the man thinking:

“HOW HAVE YOU SURVIVED THIS LONG WITHOUT ME?”

But Cathy and Leon work because they're so different. Cynthia Kaye McWilliams and Malcolm Barrett have talked about how their characters continue evolving this season, and that contrast between them remains part of what makes the pair entertaining.

Cathy brings:

“Let's handle this.”

Leon brings:

“Can we discuss this first?”

Cathy:

“NO.”

DEON COLE IS CHICAGO'S OWN.

So OF COURSE we're rooting for the home team.

Deon came out of Chicago comedy and went from performing stand-up to becoming an accomplished television writer, comedian, actor and producer.

And sometimes people forget the WRITER part.

Before millions of people knew him from black-ish, Grown-ish, stand-up specials and Average Joe, Deon spent years in television writers' rooms.

He wrote for The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien and later Conan, earning Primetime Emmy nominations as part of those writing teams.

So Deon didn't just show up in Hollywood knowing how to deliver somebody else's funny.

HE KNOWS HOW TO WRITE THE FUNNY TOO.

And that matters.

Writing comedy requires knowing timing, setup, character and exactly when NOT to say too much.

Then you watch him lead something like Average Joe, where the tone can move from hilarious to deadly serious in minutes, and you get to see a completely different part of his toolbox.

Actor.

Comedian.

Writer.

Producer.

Leading man.

❤️ AND HE'S “CHARLEEN'S BOY”

There's also something behind Deon's story that makes his success a little sweeter.

His late mother was Charleen Cole, and Deon titled his 2022 Netflix comedy special Charleen's Boy in her honor.

That title wasn't some random marketing idea.

It was about his mama.

His roots.

Who he came from.

That's another reason this series deserves attention.

Deon Cole could've stayed comfortably in comedy forever.

The man knows how to make people laugh.

But Joe Washington requires more than jokes.

Deon has to carry serious scenes, action, fear, anger and emotion while still maintaining the humor that makes Joe feel like Joe.

And he serves as an executive producer on the series too.

That's why calling Average Joe a “Deon Cole comedy” doesn't really explain what you're getting.

It isn't a sitcom.

It isn't straight drama.

It isn't a traditional thriller.

IT'S ALL OF IT.

And Season 2 appears perfectly happy to keep viewers guessing.

😩 BUT ONLY EIGHT EPISODES?!

Now Paramount...

We need to discuss something.

Season 2 is only eight episodes. 

After almost THREE YEARS?!

Y'ALL FOUND CAPE TOWN BUT COULDN'T FIND TWO MORE EPISODES?!

We waited all this damn time and y'all came back with eight?

That's dangerous with a show this easy to watch.

Two episodes premiered August 19, and the rest are being released weekly on Wednesdays.

Which means you can't just sit there and inhale the entire season in one night.

Paramount said:

“NOPE. YOU'RE GOING TO WAIT AND THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU JUST SAW.”

But we don't have to like it.

NOW let me tell y'all why I've been waiting for this show to come back.

AVERAGE JOE IS UNPREDICTABLE AS HELL.

And THAT is what I like.

I don't want to know what's going to happen 20 minutes before it happens.

“He's the killer.”

“She's about to betray them.”

“He's about to get caught.”

And then be right about everything.

SURPRISE ME!

Average Joe will have me thinking I've figured something out and then turn around and say:

“Girl, you don't know a damn thing. Keep watching.”

That's GOOD television to me.

And then there's Cathy.

THAT'S MY GIRL.

Cathy is every around-the-way girl who isn't looking for trouble but DAMN SURE isn't running when trouble finds her.

She's tough.

She's smart.

She's not taking no shit.

And then she turns around and looks at Leon like:

“THIS is the man I married?”

I LOVE their relationship because she is absolutely tougher than him.

Leon be a little slow sometimes.

Not STUPID.

Just...

BUFFERING.

Cathy's Wi-Fi is on fiber.

Leon still dialing up.

She reacts immediately.

He needs a minute.

She'll be ten steps ahead and he's still trying to understand how everybody got to Step 2.

And somehow?

THAT MARRIAGE WORKS.

So when Charleen's boy is out here starring in and executive-producing a series, showing people he can do drama AND comedy, after years of writing for other people and building his own career?
