FIRST THE LETTUCE, NOW THE GUAC?! TAYLOR FARMS... WHAT IS GOING ON OVER THERE?! 😭🥬🥑

Baby, put the fork DOWN for a second, because I had to check this one carefully.

And yes, there really are two separate Taylor Farms situations happening close together. One involved iceberg lettuce and Cyclospora, and now several prepared foods containing recalled jalapeños are being pulled because of a Salmonella risk.

And before somebody asks:

YES. THE LETTUCE SITUATION IS CONNECTED TO THAT DIARRHEA OUTBREAK YOU'VE BEEN HEARING ABOUT.

But there's an important distinction. We cannot say the lettuce caused everybody's recent stomach problems. What federal health officials have confirmed is an outbreak of cyclosporiasis, an intestinal illness caused by the Cyclospora parasite, linked to iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms.

And what is one of the main symptoms?

DIARRHEA.

Not the cute little “my stomach feels funny” diarrhea either.

The FDA describes it as diarrhea with frequent bowel movements, along with possible stomach cramps, bloating, gas, nausea, fatigue, loss of appetite and weight loss.

🥬 SO WHAT HAPPENED WITH THE LETTUCE?

In July, Taylor Farms recalled iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico after health officials linked iceberg lettuce to a multistate Cyclospora outbreak. The recall included certain Marketside iceberg salad and shredded lettuce products sold at Walmart, among other affected lettuce.

So yes, when you've heard this outbreak described in headlines as causing “explosive diarrhea,” they're talking about the Cyclospora outbreak associated with the lettuce.

Now I don't know who came up with the phrase explosive diarrhea for the headlines...

But that is one phrase where NO ADDITIONAL EXPLANATION IS NECESSARY.

🥑 AND NOW... THE GUAC?!

Just when lettuce was starting to regain our trust...

HERE COME THE JALAPEÑOS.

Taylor Fresh Foods has now voluntarily recalled numerous finished products containing jalapeños because the peppers may be contaminated with Salmonella. The affected foods include certain guacamole, pico de gallo, dips and other prepared foods sold through major retailers.

The jalapeños came through supplier Coast Citrus Distributors and have been connected to a broader Salmonella investigation involving peppers from a grower in Sinaloa, Mexico.

As of the latest reporting, the broader Salmonella outbreak has been associated with 345 illnesses and 36 hospitalizations across 27 states. Importantly, officials have not reported illnesses specifically tied to the recalled Taylor Farms prepared products at this point.

So don't tell people:

“Taylor Farms guacamole made 345 people sick.”

That's not what officials have established.

The recalled Taylor Farms products contain jalapeños connected to the larger investigation.

The current recall includes multiple products containing the affected jalapeños, with some “Best If Used By” dates through August 16, 2026, sold through retailers including Walmart, Target, Kroger, Whole Foods and Trader Joe's in affected states.

So don't go by the words “Taylor Farms” alone. Check the actual product and date against the recall information.
