TWO DEAD AFTER SHOOTING INSIDE CHICAGO ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

8:30pm UPDATE: Two custodians, a man and a woman, were shot and killed Monday afternoon inside Mark Twain Elementary School on the Southwest Side. Police are investigating what the Sun-Times reports is an apparent murder-suicide. Most importantly for parents hearing the words school shooting, students were not inside the building when this happened.

A tragic scene unfolded Monday afternoon on Chicago’s Southwest Side after two adults were shot and killed inside Mark Twain Elementary School in the Garfield Ridge neighborhood.

Chicago police responded to the school in the 5100 block of South Lotus Avenue, near Midway Airport. Authorities say the victims were a man and a woman who worked as custodians at the school. Both were pronounced dead following the shooting.

One important detail for parents hearing the words “elementary school shooting”: no students were inside the building when the shooting happened. Classes at Mark Twain are not scheduled to begin until August 24.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths, and this remains a developing story.

This is an incredibly disturbing way for a Chicago school community to approach the beginning of a new school year. Two people went to work inside an elementary school Monday and did not make it home.
