🚨 IRAN-LINKED HACKERS ARE THREATENING AMERICA’S WATER, POWER & COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS… EXCUSE ME, WHAT?! 😳

We already have storms knocking the lights out, boil orders popping up, phone outages, food recalls and folks wondering whether the Wi-Fi is going to make it through the afternoon.

Now we're talking about hackers threatening the WATER?!

Federal authorities have been warning for months about Iranian-affiliated cyber actors targeting critical U.S. infrastructure. Now, amid escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran, new threats attributed to Iranian hackers are raising alarms about potential attacks against American water systems, energy infrastructure and telecommunications networks.

And unfortunately, this isn't just somebody online talking crazy.

💧 THEY HAVE ALREADY TARGETED WATER SYSTEMS

The FBI and EPA announced in July that water and wastewater utilities in at least seven states had reported cyber incidents involving internet-connected industrial control equipment.

According to the FBI, attackers were able to remotely access some systems, change passwords and IP addresses and interfere with operators' ability to monitor or control equipment. Reported effects included loss of water pressure and flooding.

CISA separately warned of a “significant increase” in attacks against equipment controlling water and wastewater systems. Some incidents forced utilities into manual operation and resulted in boil-water notices.

So when somebody says, “They can't hack the water.”

Baby...

The FBI would like a word.

🇮🇷 WHERE DOES IRAN COME INTO THIS?

This part needs to be reported carefully.

Federal agencies have specifically documented Iranian-affiliated cyber actors targeting U.S. critical infrastructure, including water and wastewater systems, energy facilities and government operations.

In April, the EPA, FBI, CISA and NSA issued an urgent joint warning about ongoing Iranian-affiliated cyber activity affecting operational technology used by American drinking-water and wastewater facilities.

Then in July, CISA and the FBI updated their warning, saying Iranian-affiliated actors continued targeting industrial controllers used across water, energy and government facilities, including local municipalities.

Now fresh reporting says hackers presenting themselves as connected to Iranian cyber operations are threatening additional attacks against American energy, water and telecommunications systems, including warnings about “unexpected and critical events.”

⚠️ BUT DON'T START FILLING THE BATHTUB YET

Here's the distinction everybody needs to understand.

There is not currently evidence that Iran has poisoned America's drinking water or shut down the entire U.S. water supply.

And the latest reported attempted attacks on American infrastructure have reportedly not succeeded in producing the kind of nationwide catastrophe people may imagine when they hear “attack the water supply.” 

A cyberattack on a water utility can instead interfere with pumps, pressure, monitoring equipment or computerized controls. Utilities can sometimes switch to manual operations while systems are secured.

That's still serious as hell.

But we're not turning this into a disaster movie before there's a disaster.

😳 AND THIS COMES WHILE GARY JUST LOST POWER AGAIN

Now THIS is where I'm looking sideways.

We literally just reported another major outage affecting Gary and Northwest Indiana.

And now I'm reading federal warnings about foreign cyber actors targeting power, water and communications infrastructure?

No, I'm not saying Iran caused Gary's outage. There is currently no evidence establishing that connection, and we're not going to manufacture one for clicks.

But it certainly reminds you how much of everyday life depends on infrastructure most of us never think about until it stops working.

Electricity.

Water.

Cell towers.

Internet.

Wastewater treatment.

You don't realize how much civilization is hiding behind a switch until somebody flips it off.

WHAT THE HELL?!

Y'all can argue about governments, missiles, sanctions and international politics all day.

But leave my damn faucet out of it.

I already have to check whether my Social Security number got leaked, whether my debit card got cloned, whether my chicken got recalled and whether NIPSCO remembered Gary exists.

Now I gotta look suspiciously at the kitchen sink?!

Absolutely not. 😭

But seriously, this is why cybersecurity isn't just about somebody stealing your Facebook password anymore.

When the computers being targeted control water pumps, electricity and other essential services, a cyberattack can become a real-world public-safety problem.

Federal agencies have been telling utilities to disconnect vulnerable control equipment from direct internet access, strengthen passwords and network controls, monitor systems for unauthorized changes and make sure facilities can continue operating manually during an attack.

For regular residents, there's no reason to panic or start hoarding water based solely on these threats. If an actual local water emergency occurs, follow instructions from your municipal water department and public-health authorities, particularly any official boil-water or do-not-use notice.

But America absolutely needs to take this seriously.

Because apparently in 2026 even the water bill needs cybersecurity.
