KARMELO ANTHONY'S TRIAL JUDGE REMOVED FROM CASE AS HE FIGHTS FOR A NEW TRIAL

Just when you thought the Karmelo Anthony case was over...

BABY, TURN THE COURTROOM LIGHTS BACK ON. 👀⚖️

There has been a major development in the Texas case that captured national attention after a confrontation between two teenagers at a high school track meet ended with 17-year-old Austin Metcalf dead.

Karmelo Anthony was ultimately convicted of murder and sentenced to 35 years in prison.

Now Anthony's new attorneys are trying to get that conviction thrown out and secure a new trial.

And they just scored an important victory:

THE JUDGE WHO PRESIDED OVER HIS MURDER TRIAL HAS BEEN REMOVED FROM THE CASE.

Visiting Judge Sid Harle granted the defense's request Wednesday to recuse Judge John Roach Jr. from further proceedings involving Anthony's case. 

But before we get into WHY...

For anybody who hasn't followed this case from the beginning, here's how we got here.

🏃🏾‍♂️ WHAT HAPPENED AT THE TRACK MEET?

On April 2, 2025, Karmelo Anthony and Austin Metcalf were both 17-year-old students attending a high school track meet in Frisco, Texas.

According to trial testimony, Anthony was sitting under another school's team tent during a rain delay.

Metcalf and his teammates repeatedly told Anthony to leave.

An argument followed.

Witnesses testified that Anthony warned Metcalf:

“Touch me and see what happens.”

Metcalf then physically attempted to remove Anthony from the tent.

Anthony pulled a knife from his bag and stabbed Metcalf once in the chest.

Metcalf died from his injuries.

⚖️ KARMELO SAID IT WAS SELF-DEFENSE

And THIS became the heart of the case.

Anthony never disputed that he stabbed Metcalf.

The question was WHY.

His defense maintained that Anthony acted in self-defense after Metcalf initiated physical contact with him.

Prosecutors argued that the circumstances did not legally justify Anthony using deadly force.

A Collin County jury ultimately agreed with prosecutors.

In June 2026, Anthony was found guilty of murder and sentenced to 35 years in prison. 

🌎 THEN THE CASE BECAME MUCH BIGGER THAN THE COURTROOM

Anthony is Black.

Metcalf was white.

And almost immediately after the killing, this case exploded nationally.

People argued about race.

People argued about self-defense.

People argued about Texas law.

People argued about fundraising for both families.

And social media did what social media ALWAYS does:

Everybody became a lawyer by lunchtime. 😭

Both sides of the actual criminal case maintained that race wasn't the basis of their legal arguments, even as racial debates surrounding the case grew outside the courtroom.

⚖️ SO WHY DID THE DEFENSE WANT THE JUDGE REMOVED?

Now THIS is where today's development comes in.

After Anthony was convicted, Judge John Roach Jr., who presided over the trial, participated in a televised interview.

Among other things, Roach defended the fairness of the proceedings and said the jurors “got it right.” 

Anthony's new attorneys basically said:

WAIT A MINUTE.

Their argument was that Anthony is still challenging his conviction, so the same judge who publicly defended the verdict shouldn't be deciding important post-trial issues, including Anthony's attempt to obtain a new trial.

The defense also raised concerns about courtroom-access restrictions during the original trial, arguing that Anthony's constitutional right to a public trial had been compromised.

👨🏾‍⚖️ AND ANOTHER JUDGE AGREED

Visiting Judge Sid Harle considered the recusal request Wednesday.

And he granted it.

The ruling does not necessarily mean Judge Roach intentionally treated Anthony unfairly during the original trial.

The legal issue is whether circumstances could reasonably create questions about the judge's impartiality going forward.

Harle concluded that the standard for recusal had been met.

Translation?

The court isn't necessarily saying:

“THE JUDGE WAS CROOKED!”

It's saying:

“Somebody else needs to handle this next part.”

And that's a BIG difference.

🚨 AND NO, KARMELO HAS NOT BEEN RELEASED

Karmelo Anthony's conviction has NOT been overturned.

He has NOT been found innocent.

He has NOT been granted a new trial yet.

And Judge Roach's removal does not erase the jury's guilty verdict or Anthony's 35-year sentence.

Anthony remains incarcerated while his attorneys challenge his conviction.

👀 BUT NOW COMES THE REALLY IMPORTANT HEARING

A different judge will consider Anthony's request for a new trial.

According to current reporting, Judge Michael B. Chitty is taking over that proceeding.

Anthony's defense is raising several issues surrounding the original trial, including courtroom access, jury instructions and other alleged errors that they argue prevented Anthony from receiving a fair trial.

And THAT ruling matters enormously.

Because if the court grants Anthony a new trial...

WE COULD ACTUALLY DO THIS WHOLE THING AGAIN.

New trial.

New jury.

Both sides presenting their cases again.

And potentially another verdict.

If the request is denied, Anthony can continue pursuing his legal challenges through the appellate process.

🔴 LADY RED SAYS...

Now THIS is where people need to separate their feelings about Karmelo Anthony from what happened today.

You can believe Anthony was guilty.

You can believe he acted in self-defense.

You can believe 35 years was too much.

You can believe it wasn't enough.

But none of those opinions change the question the court is dealing with now:

DID HE RECEIVE A LEGALLY FAIR TRIAL?

That's what his attorneys are challenging.

And removing Judge Roach doesn't answer that question.

It simply means Roach won't be the judge answering it.

So no, Karmelo isn't walking out of prison today.

But his attempt to get another trial just cleared one hurdle.

And now...

ALL EYES ARE ON THE NEW JUDGE. 👀⚖️
