NAS NAMED A BMI ICON, RECEIVES ONE OF MUSIC’S HIGHEST SONGWRITING HONORS

Hip-hop legend Nas has another major honor to add to a career already filled with them.

The Queensbridge rapper was honored with the BMI Icon Award at the 2026 BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards in Los Angeles, recognizing more than three decades of songwriting, storytelling and influence on hip-hop culture. The Icon Award was the evening's highest individual honor.

For hip-hop fans, Nas becoming a BMI Icon feels less like somebody finally deciding he's legendary and more like somebody finally putting the paperwork on what the culture has known for decades.

From the moment Illmatic arrived in 1994, Nas established himself as a different kind of MC. His ability to turn neighborhoods, struggle, ambition and everyday life into vivid stories helped change what listeners expected from a rapper with a microphone and a pen.

Songs including “N.Y. State of Mind,” “The World Is Yours,” “If I Ruled the World,” “One Mic” and “Made You Look” helped build a catalog that has survived generations of hip-hop trends.

And more than 30 years later, he's still here.

Still recording.

Still relevant.

Still being honored.

And according to Lady Red...

🏆 NAS JOINS SOME SERIOUS COMPANY

The BMI Icon honor places Nas alongside previous recipients including James Brown, Al Green, Isaac Hayes, Janet Jackson, Patti LaBelle, Nile Rodgers, Snoop Dogg, The Jacksons, Busta Rhymes, Lil Wayne and Babyface.

During the ceremony, BMI President and CEO Mike Steinberg praised Nas for changing the standard in hip-hop, while Babyface participated in the tribute and celebrated Nas as a pioneer, poet and philosopher.

Nas also reflected on his journey during his acceptance speech, remembering seeing the letters BMI on records when he was young, long before he could have imagined eventually becoming a songwriter represented by the organization and, decades later, standing on its stage receiving its Icon Award.

That's a full-circle hip-hop moment.

A kid looking at the credits on records eventually becomes one of the names other kids study in the credits.

🎙️ FROM ILLMATIC TO ICON

Nas released Illmatic when he was just 20 years old.

Today, the album is routinely regarded as one of hip-hop's landmark recordings, but Nas didn't allow one classic album to become the entire story of his career.

He continued evolving through albums including It Was Written, I Am..., Stillmatic, God's Son, Life Is Good and, more recently, his King's Disease and Magic projects.

His longevity is especially significant in hip-hop, where artists who arrive young aren't always given the opportunity to grow older with their audiences.

Nas did.

And somewhere along the way, apparently the aging process looked at him and said:

“I'ma come back later.”

👑 KENDRICK LAMAR HAD A HUGE NIGHT, TOO

The ceremony also celebrated another generation of elite hip-hop songwriting.

Kendrick Lamar was named BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Songwriter of the Year, recognized for co-writing six of the year's most-performed songs, including “squabble up,” “tv off,” “peekaboo” and “luther.”

Meanwhile, Kendrick and SZA's “luther” was named BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Song of the Year.

The record spent 23 weeks at No. 1 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, breaking the previous record held by Kendrick's own “Not Like Us.”

Yes.

Kendrick broke Kendrick's record.

That's a different kind of problem to have.

“Who knocked you out of the record book?”

“Me.”

❤️ HIP-HOP GETTING TO HONOR ITS LEGENDS

Beyond trophies and statistics, Nas receiving this award represents something important for hip-hop.

The genre is old enough now for its pioneers and legends to have 30-, 40- and even 50-year careers, and the culture is increasingly getting opportunities to celebrate those artists while they're still here to receive their flowers.

Nas has gone from the 20-year-old kid painting pictures of Queensbridge with words to an elder statesman of hip-hop whose influence can be heard in generations of MCs who came after him.

That's bigger than an award.

That's legacy.
