🚨 OFF-DUTY COOK COUNTY CORRECTIONS OFFICER AMONG 3 SHOT IN RIVER NORTH

An early-morning confrontation in River North ended with three men shot, including an off-duty Cook County Sheriff's correctional officer.

Chicago police say the shooting happened around 3:40 a.m. Saturday, September 19, in the 100 block of West Erie Street near Clark Street. Investigators say the three men became involved in an altercation with one or more other people before gunfire erupted.

🔫 THREE MEN WOUNDED

Police say a 24-year-old man was shot in the cheek and leg and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition.

A 25-year-old man was shot in both legs and one hand, while a 22-year-old man was shot in both legs. Both were reported in good condition. All three victims were transported to Northwestern.

The Cook County Sheriff's Office confirmed that one of the injured men is an off-duty correctional officer. CBS Chicago reported that the officer was in good condition. Authorities have not publicly identified which of the three victims is the officer.

🚨 SHOOTER FLED

Police say the shooter or shooters left the scene after the gunfire. As of the latest reports, authorities had not announced an arrest.

Investigators have also not publicly explained exactly what started the confrontation or confirmed how many people fired weapons. ABC7 video showed a large police presence around the scene as officers examined shell casings in the street.

Area Three detectives are investigating.

And that's the part River North residents, workers and everybody trying to enjoy downtown Chicago wants answered: How does an argument outside a nightclub turn into three people getting shot before 4 o'clock in the morning?

One man is fighting critical injuries. Two more were wounded. And somebody responsible for firing those shots was still unaccounted for in the latest public update.
