Baby, sometimes old footage resurfaces and makes you nostalgic.

Then sometimes old footage resurfaces and makes you say:

WAIT A DAMN MINUTE.

A decades-old clip of a very young Beyoncé has resurfaced online, and people aren't talking about her vocals, Destiny's Child or what she was wearing.

They're looking at the fact that this young woman is sitting on the lap of a grown man she was working with.

And I'm sorry...

WHY?!

Because somewhere along the way, the internet started debating whether this proves they were romantically involved.

That's not even MY question.

My question is much simpler:

WHY WOULD A GROWN MAN HAVE A 19-YEAR-OLD WOMAN HE'S WORKING WITH SITTING ON HIS LAP IN A PROFESSIONAL SETTING?

Sir, they had CHAIRS in 2001. 😐

That's what bothers me about the footage.

I don't have to accuse this man of having a sexual relationship with Beyoncé.

I don't know that.

The video doesn't establish that.

But I can absolutely look at the interaction and say:

THAT IS INAPPROPRIATE TO ME.

If you're the older person in the room, particularly someone with professional access or influence, YOU establish the boundary.

You don't need a 19-year-old client, artist, employee, colleague or anybody else you're conducting business with sitting in your lap.

"Come sit on my lap."

FOR WHAT?!

Are we discussing a record or waiting on Santa Claus?! 🎅🏾😒

👀 AND THIS IS WHY OLD FOOTAGE CAN HIT DIFFERENT TODAY

There were plenty of things people brushed off decades ago that make people uncomfortable when viewed today.

And sometimes that's because we've gotten better at recognizing professional boundaries and power dynamics.

That doesn't mean we rewrite history or accuse somebody of something the evidence doesn't establish.

It means we're allowed to look back and say:

“YEAH... THAT SHOULDN'T HAVE BEEN NORMAL.”

And that's where I land on this one.

I don't care whether Beyoncé willingly sat there.

The older adult can still say, “Nah, grab a chair.”

That's called a boundary.

And before somebody comes running in here yelling:

“BUT NOTHING HAPPENED!”

WHO SAID SOMETHING HAPPENED?!

That's not the point.

Everything inappropriate doesn't automatically mean somebody committed a crime.

Everything uncomfortable doesn't prove a sexual relationship.

And criticizing questionable professional boundaries doesn't require us to manufacture allegations.

Sometimes you can simply look at something and say:

“SIR... WHY WAS THIS NECESSARY?”

Because if I walked into a business meeting tomorrow and the man running it patted his thigh and said:

“Come sit right here.”

Baby, the meeting is OVER. 😂

And THAT'S what makes this resurfaced Beyoncé footage worth talking about.

Not some imaginary secret affair.

Not conspiracy theories.

Not turning a few seconds of video into something we cannot prove.

It's the uncomfortable question sitting right there in the footage:

WHEN DID THIS EVER QUALIFY AS PROFESSIONAL?!
