📱😳 CHATGPT CAN READ YOUR iMESSAGES NOW?! BABY, WHO INVITED A.I. INTO THE GROUP CHAT?!

We already had to worry about screenshots.

We already had to worry about somebody forwarding the text.

We already had to worry about your friend handing their phone to everybody at brunch saying, “Girl, READ what he said!”

Now apparently we have to add:

“Hold on, let me ask ChatGPT what you meant.” 😭

OpenAI has introduced an Apple Messages plugin for ChatGPT that can allow users to connect Messages on compatible Apple-silicon Macs and let ChatGPT work with their iMessage, SMS and RCS conversations.

Yes.

THE TEXT MESSAGES.

But before everybody throws their iPhone into Lake Michigan, there's a VERY important part of this story:

ChatGPT does not automatically have access to your iMessages.

A user has to deliberately connect the Messages plugin and grant the required permissions.

📲 SO WHAT CAN CHATGPT ACTUALLY DO?

Once somebody chooses to connect Messages, ChatGPT can help them search conversations, find information buried in old messages, summarize long threads, draft replies and perform other message-related tasks.

That could be incredibly convenient.

Imagine saying:

“Find the address Auntie sent me three months ago.”

Instead of scrolling through 4,792 messages, six arguments, eleven recipes and somebody's unsolicited picture of their dinner.

THAT part? I understand. 😂

But privacy advocates are raising a much bigger question.

👀 YOU GAVE PERMISSION... BUT DID EVERYBODY ELSE IN THE TEXT?

And THERE IT IS.

If I connect my Messages to an AI assistant, the conversations sitting inside my account aren't necessarily only my words.

They're yours too.

My mama's.

My cousin's.

My best friend's.

The family group chat where somebody has been mad since Thanksgiving 2019.

Privacy and security experts have questioned what it means when one participant can authorize AI access to conversations containing messages written by people who never personally agreed to that AI access.

That's where this story gets a lot more interesting than:

“OMG! CHATGPT IS READING YOUR TEXTS!”

Because that's not quite what's happening.

The real question is whether one person's consent should be enough for AI to analyze a conversation involving several people.

🔐 OPENAI SAYS THERE ARE PRIVACY PROTECTIONS

OpenAI says the Messages plugin is designed to operate locally by default and access message information in response to what the user asks it to do, rather than simply uploading and indexing an entire Messages history automatically.

And sending a message isn't supposed to happen secretly either. User approval is required by default before ChatGPT sends Messages on someone's behalf.

So no, ChatGPT isn't supposed to be sitting somewhere eating virtual popcorn while reading:

“Girl, don't tell NOBODY I told you this...”

Unless somebody with access actually connects Messages and asks it to work with that conversation.

Which brings us directly back to the problem.

Because you know DAMN WELL the juiciest sentence in every group chat starts with:

“Don't repeat this.” 😭

🍎 THIS ISN'T THE SAME AS APPLE'S REGULAR CHATGPT INTEGRATION

There's another distinction getting lost in some of the scary headlines.

The Messages plugin is not the same thing as Apple's existing ChatGPT integration built into Apple Intelligence.

Apple's system integration has its own controls and data-handling setup. The new Messages capability involves separately connecting the Messages plugin and granting access.

In other words:

Owning an iPhone does not suddenly mean ChatGPT can open your Messages.

Using ChatGPT does not automatically mean it can read your texts.

And somebody texting YOU does not give ChatGPT direct access to your phone.

The controversy is what happens when the person on the other side of your conversation chooses to connect their own Messages.

Now THIS is where technology is moving faster than our social rules.

Because technically?

That's their phone.

Those messages are sitting in their account.

But socially?

BABY...

Some of y'all have texted things that were intended for ONE PAIR OF HUMAN EYEBALLS. 😂

You weren't expecting:

Keisha + ChatGPT + whatever artificial intelligence comes after ChatGPT.

And let's not even discuss the family group chat.

Because if AI ever starts analyzing mine and comes back with:

“Based on 14 years of conversation, your family may have unresolved communication issues...”

DELETE THE APP.

WE KNOW. 😭😂

But underneath the jokes is a legitimate privacy conversation.

AI is becoming capable of helping us with increasingly personal information: emails, documents, calendars and now potentially private message histories when users choose to connect them.

So the question isn't simply:

“Can AI do it?”

Clearly, increasingly, it can.

The bigger question we're all going to have to answer is:

How much of our private digital lives do we WANT AI involved in, and who gets to give permission when those digital lives overlap with somebody else's?

Because apparently the group chat has entered the AI era.

And some of y'all better start deleting messages from 2017 IMMEDIATELY. 😭📱
