šØ COSTA RICA SHIPS 45 TONS OF COCAINE TO THE U.S. JUST TO DESTROY IT... BECAUSE THEIR INCINERATOR COULDNāT HANDLE ALL THAT?!

SAN JOSĆ, COSTA RICA š„ When we first saw this headline, the immediate question was:
WAIT. Yāall had to put almost 100,000 POUNDS of cocaine on a MILITARY PLANE and fly it to America just to burn it?!Ā š³
Turns out, yes.
A U.S. Air Force C-17 military transport planeĀ carried roughly 45 metric tons of cocaine seized by Costa Rican authoritiesĀ to the United States for destruction. The massive stash had accumulated from multiple anti-drug operations over recent months. EFE Noticias
And before anybody asks the obvious...
š„ WHY COULDNāT COSTA RICA JUST DESTROY IT?
They technically could.
The problem was trying to destroy 44,697.13 kilograms of drugsĀ with the infrastructure available in Costa Rica.
According to an official Costa Rican court order authorizing the operation, the country's government incinerator has limited capacityĀ and cannot efficiently destroy huge quantities of seized narcotics quickly enough. Nexus PJ
Private companies in Costa Rica have industrial furnaces that can also be used, but the court said their regular commercial operations mean they can only accommodate comparatively small quantities at a time. Nexus PJ
Meanwhile, the country's drug evidence warehouse is already over capacityĀ as authorities continue making large seizures.
And storing nearly 45 tons of somebody's cocaine indefinitely?
BABY, THAT IS NOT A STORAGE PROBLEM YOU WANT. š
The court specifically cited the danger associated with keeping such an enormous quantity of valuable narcotics in storage, including the possibility that trafficking organizations could attempt to recover it. Nexus PJ
š° THEN THERE WAS ANOTHER PROBLEM: MONEY.
Costa Rican Attorney General Carlo DĆazĀ said budget limitations prevented authorities from carrying out the destruction domestically. El Observador CR
So Costa Rican authorities coordinated with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and other American authoritiesĀ to get the mountain of drugs out of the country.
And when we say mountain...
We're talking roughly 98,500 pounds.
That ain't evidence.
THAT'S INVENTORY.Ā š©
āļø SO WHERE DID ALL THAT COCAINE GO?
The Costa Rican court authorized the drugs to be transported to Reworld Solutions in Indianapolis, Indiana, where the material was scheduled for incineration.
The evidence had already been counted, labeled, sealed and packaged on pallets before transportation. Costa Rican officials were also assigned to oversee the process and document that the drugs being transported were actually destroyed. Nexus PJ
So no, America wasn't getting a 45-ton cocaine delivery.
Because we already KNOW somebody read that headline and said:
āWhy the hell they sending it HERE?!āĀ š
It was essentially a gigantic international evidence-disposal operation.
Still, the whole thing sounds absolutely WILD when you strip away the government language:
COSTA RICA:Ā We confiscated 45 tons of cocaine.
INCINERATOR:Ā Absolutely not.
BUDGET:Ā Don't look at me.
EVIDENCE WAREHOUSE:Ā I'M FULL.
UNITED STATES:Ā Fine. Put it on the C-17. šāļø
Sometimes the explanation makes perfect sense...
and somehow makes the headline even crazier.
