🚨 DOJ CIVIL RIGHTS DIVISION LOSES 300+ LAWYERS AS NEW CONSERVATIVE HIRES COME IN: LADY RED ASKS, ARE WE WHITEWASHING CIVIL RIGHTS NOW?!

The Justice Department's Civil Rights Division, the part of the federal government specifically charged with enforcing laws against discrimination and protecting constitutional rights, has gone through a massive personnel and policy transformation under the Trump administration.

According to a new Bloomberg Law analysis, more than 300 of the division's 400-plus lawyers have left during the past 19 months. The division has since hired more than 80 attorneys, with new lawyers coming from more than 20 conservative legal organizations.

Now wait a damn minute.

...then start rebuilding the Civil Rights Division with attorneys whose backgrounds include conservative advocacy organizations?

👀 WHO ARE THEY BRINGING IN?

Bloomberg Law reports that some new attorneys previously worked with organizations including America First Legal, founded by Trump adviser Stephen Miller, and the American Center for Law & Justice, a conservative Christian legal organization.

Other hires reportedly have backgrounds with organizations advocating for lower immigration levels, while some previously worked for or with the law firm founded by Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon, who now heads the Civil Rights Division.

DOJ says the rebuilding is continuing.

A Justice Department spokesperson told Bloomberg that about 100 lawyers and staff have joined the division, with another 100 expected, and said the division remains committed to protecting the rights of all Americans.

So that's the administration's position.

But former Civil Rights Division attorneys and civil-rights organizations see something very different.

They argue the enormous loss of career lawyers combined with the division's changing enforcement priorities threatens decades of institutional knowledge and traditional civil-rights enforcement.

🧐 AND THE MISSION IS CHANGING TOO

This isn't simply about swapping lawyers.

The division's priorities have shifted.

Under its current leadership, DOJ has increased its focus on issues including gun rights, alleged anti-Christian discrimination, immigration, voter rolls, antisemitism on college campuses and challenges to diversity programs. 

The administration says that's legitimate civil-rights enforcement and argues previous administrations did not always enforce civil-rights laws evenly.

Critics say the division is being redirected away from the historical enforcement work involving racial discrimination, voting rights and protections for marginalized communities.

And THAT is where Lady Red's question comes in.

ARE WE PROTECTING CIVIL RIGHTS... OR REDEFINING THEM UNTIL WE DON'T RECOGNIZE THEM ANYMORE?

Because let's remember why this division exists.

Congress created the Civil Rights Division in 1957, and its authority expanded with the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to enforce federal protections involving discrimination in schools, employment, public accommodations and other areas.

That history matters.

🎙️ LADY RED: DON'T WHITEWASH THE HISTORY OUT OF CIVIL RIGHTS

Civil rights weren't created because everybody suddenly woke up one morning and decided to play nice.

Black people were being denied rights.

People were fighting segregation.

People were fighting discrimination.

People were fighting for voting rights.

People were risking their lives just to receive protections that were supposedly already guaranteed to Americans.

So when I hear that hundreds of career attorneys have walked out of the CIVIL RIGHTS DIVISION, while its priorities and personnel are undergoing a dramatic ideological shift...

HELL YES, I'M PAYING ATTENTION.

But I'm also going to keep the facts straight.

Hiring a conservative attorney doesn't automatically mean that attorney won't enforce civil-rights laws fairly. Political or professional background alone doesn't prove misconduct.

And the Justice Department says its Civil Rights Division is protecting the rights of all Americans and enforcing federal law evenhandedly.

The real test isn't going to be somebody's résumé.

THE REAL TEST IS WHAT THIS DIVISION DOES.

What cases does it bring?

What cases does it stop bringing?

Whose rights does it defend?

How does it enforce voting, housing, disability, employment and discrimination laws?

And when somebody's civil rights are violated...

DOES THE CIVIL RIGHTS DIVISION STILL SHOW UP?

Because you can repaint the walls.

You can replace the furniture.

You can change who's sitting behind the desks.

But don't erase the reason the damn building was constructed in the first place.
