DORIS MILLER FOUGHT FOR THIS COUNTRY. TRUMP NEVER SERVED. SO WHY MIGHT MILLER LOSE HIS AIRCRAFT CARRIER TO HIM?! ⚓😒

THIS MF IS DOING THE MOST AND NOT ENOUGH AT THE SAME DAMN TIME.

Because we JUST got through talking about thousands of American sailors aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln spending months at sea while families reported food shortages, contaminated water, broken toilets, mold, exhaustion and serious mental-health concerns.

And when President Donald Trump was asked about their families' being concerned about their loved ones?

He responded:

“NO, THEY'RE NOT.”

Then, when asked whether the deployment had gone on too long, Trump said it was:

“NOT NEARLY LONG ENOUGH.” 

Excuse me?!

Now, barely a week later, we're hearing that the Navy is considering taking the name of an ACTUAL Black Navy war hero off another aircraft carrier...

AND DONALD TRUMP'S NAME IS BEING DISCUSSED AS A POSSIBLE REPLACEMENT?!

Because we need to talk.

⚓ FIRST, LET'S REMEMBER WHO DORIS MILLER WAS

Doris “Dorie” Miller wasn't a politician.

He wasn't a billionaire.

He wasn't sitting safely behind a desk telling sailors how long they ought to stay deployed.

HE WAS A UNITED STATES SAILOR.

And he served during a time when the same country he was defending segregated its own military.

Miller was a mess attendant aboard the USS West Virginia during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

Black sailors were largely restricted to service positions at the time.

So Miller wasn't even trained as a gunner.

Then Pearl Harbor came under attack.

And Doris Miller said, essentially:

NOT TODAY.

He helped carry his wounded captain and then took control of an anti-aircraft machine gun he had never been formally trained to operate and fired at attacking Japanese aircraft.

His actions made history.

Miller became the first Black American awarded the Navy Cross. 

Then, in 1943, Miller was killed while serving aboard the USS Liscome Bay.

HE WAS ONLY 24 YEARS OLD.

Twenty-four.

He didn't get to come home and build hotels.

He didn't get golf courses.

He didn't get to run for president.

HE DIED SERVING THIS COUNTRY.

🇺🇸 THAT'S WHY USS DORIS MILLER MATTERS

In 2020, the Navy announced that its future Ford-class aircraft carrier, CVN-81, would be named the USS Doris Miller.

It was historic.

Miller would become the first African American honored with an aircraft carrier named after him, and the carrier would also represent extraordinary recognition for an enlisted sailor.

Construction is underway, with delivery currently expected in the 2030s.

But NOW?

Multiple reports say the Navy is considering changing the carrier's name.

And according to sources familiar with the discussions...

DONALD TRUMP'S NAME HAS BEEN CONSIDERED. 

IMPORTANT:

No final decision has been announced.

The carrier has NOT officially been renamed USS Donald Trump.

But the fact that we're even having this conversation is enough for me.

Because...

WHY DOES DORIS MILLER HAVE TO LOSE HIS HONOR FOR YOU TO GET YOURS?!

🎖️ AND HERE'S THE PART THAT MAKES IT EVEN CRAZIER

Donald Trump never served in the United States military.

That's not political opinion.

That's biography.

Trump attended the New York Military Academy, but that was a private military-style school, not service in the United States Armed Forces.

During the Vietnam era, Trump received college deferments and later a medical deferment for bone spurs. He was never called into military service.

And let me be VERY clear:

YOU DON'T HAVE TO HAVE SERVED IN THE MILITARY TO BECOME PRESIDENT.

Plenty of presidents didn't serve.

And aircraft carriers have been named after presidents.

That's not the issue.

The issue is:

WHY REMOVE DORIS MILLER?!

If America someday decides Donald Trump deserves a ship named after him...

Build another damn ship.

BUT LEAVE DORIS' BOAT ALONE.

😒 ESPECIALLY AFTER WHAT JUST HAPPENED TO THE USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN SAILORS

THIS is what makes the timing particularly irritating.

The USS Abraham Lincoln has been deployed for roughly nine months, including more than 200 consecutive days without a port call, a modern record for a U.S. aircraft carrier.

Families and lawmakers reported disturbing conditions.

We're talking about allegations of:

Food shortages.

Water problems and contamination.

Broken plumbing and toilets.

Moldy showers.

Laundry problems.

Exhaustion.

And mental-health crises so serious that lawmakers demanded answers about reports of multiple sailors attempting to go overboard. 

These weren't random Facebook rumors.

Fifteen Democratic senators demanded answers from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth about the conditions, medical resources, food, hygiene, plumbing, water and mental-health support aboard the ship.

The Pentagon disputed or downplayed portions of the reporting, and officials have said the crew continued receiving meals and support. But the sailors' families continued publicly raising concerns.

And when Trump was asked about worried families?

“NO, THEY'RE NOT.”

SIR.

HOW ARE YOU GOING TO TELL THEIR FAMILIES THEY'RE NOT WORRIED?!

Then you say nine months at sea was:

“NOT NEARLY LONG ENOUGH.” 

You know what's easy to say is “not nearly long enough”?

A deployment...

WHEN YOUR ASS AIN'T DEPLOYED.

🤦🏾‍♀️ AND NOW YOU WANT YOUR NAME ON A CARRIER?!

That's where Lady Red is stuck.

You didn't serve.

Fine.

But these sailors ARE serving.

They've been living on an aircraft carrier for months.

They're away from husbands.

Wives.

Children.

Parents.

Their beds.

Their homes.

Their LIFE.

And instead of showing some compassion when families publicly complained about their conditions, you dismissed the concern.

BUT NOW WE'RE DISCUSSING YOUR NAME ON ONE OF THEIR SHIPS?!

YOU CAN'T DISMISS THE PEOPLE IN THE NAVY AND THEN WANT THE NAVY TO PUT YOUR NAME IN 40-FOOT LETTERS ON A BOAT.

Pick a struggle.

😳 AND THERE'S ANOTHER USS DORIS MILLER CONTROVERSY

The name isn't the only issue involving CVN-81.

Trump recently directed the Pentagon to return future Ford-class carriers to steam-powered catapults instead of the newer electromagnetic launch system, beginning with CVN-81.

Democratic senators are challenging that order, arguing that the Doris Miller is already under construction and its electromagnetic launch equipment is reportedly nearly 50% complete, meaning redesigning the ship could potentially add costs and delays.

So within DAYS we're talking about:

Changing Doris Miller's technology.

Possibly changing Doris Miller's NAME.

Potentially putting Trump's name on it.

SIR, CAN DORIS' SHIP GET BUILT IN PEACE?!

This isn't complicated to me.

Doris Miller served.

DONALD TRUMP DID NOT.

Doris Miller fought during the attack on Pearl Harbor.

DONALD TRUMP DID NOT.

Doris Miller became the first Black recipient of the Navy Cross.

DONALD TRUMP DID NOT.

Doris Miller died while serving his country at 24.

And the United States Navy decided more than 75 years later that his sacrifice deserved to be immortalized on one of America's most powerful warships.

LET THAT MAN HAVE HIS DAMN SHIP.

And after what we've just watched happen with the USS Abraham Lincoln, maybe everybody in Washington should spend a little LESS time worrying about whose name goes on the side of an aircraft carrier...

AND A LITTLE MORE TIME WORRYING ABOUT THE PEOPLE LIVING INSIDE THEM.

Because a ship doesn't fight a war.

SAILORS DO.

A ship doesn't miss its children.

SAILORS DO.

A ship doesn't suffer exhaustion, hunger, depression or homesickness.

SAILORS DO.

And somebody who never spent ONE DAY deployed at sea should probably think twice before telling sailors who have spent more than 200 consecutive days at sea that their deployment was “not nearly long enough.”

And he DAMN sure shouldn't need an aircraft carrier already honoring a man who DIED IN UNIFORM to make his own name bigger.

You want to honor Trump someday?

Have that debate.

But don't make Doris Miller move.

THIS AIN'T MUSICAL DAMN AIRCRAFT CARRIERS.

Doris Miller earned his place in American military history.

And the Navy already gave CVN-81 his name.

USS DORIS MILLER.

Sounds perfectly fine to me.
