REGULAR CUSTOMER KILLED DURING ARMED ROBBERY AT SOUTHWEST SIDE GAS STATION

A routine early-morning stop for coffee and gas turned deadly at a Chicago gas station, leaving a suburban family grieving and police searching for whoever was responsible.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office has identified the victim as 36-year-old Justin McCauley of Willowbrook, who was shot and killed Tuesday morning during an armed robbery at the Thorntons gas station in the 3400 block of South California Avenue in Brighton Park.

Chicago police say the robbery unfolded at approximately 2:52 a.m. when one or more armed suspects entered the store with handguns and demanded money from the register. The robbers took cash and began leaving the business.

That's when McCauley was shot multiple times.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

HE WAS JUST A REGULAR CUSTOMER

That detail makes this story especially difficult.

Witnesses described McCauley as a regular customer who had stopped at the gas station to get coffee and fuel his vehicle.

According to a witness who spoke with CBS Chicago, McCauley noticed a group of suspicious people wearing ski masks and warned an employee working at the register. Shortly afterward, masked individuals entered the store, and the robbery began.

Think about that.

A man stopped for some coffee and gas, saw something that didn't look right and apparently tried to warn somebody else of possible danger.

And he never made it home.

There really isn't anything funny or sarcastic to add to that.

A FAMILY NOW WANTS JUSTICE

McCauley's family is now mourning a 36-year-old man whose life ended over a gas-station robbery.

And the question hanging over this case is one Chicago families have had to ask far too many times:

Why did somebody have to die?

Police say the robbers were already leaving with money when the gunfire erupted.

Whatever amount of money was inside that register couldn't possibly be worth a human life.

THIS GAS STATION HAS SEEN GUNFIRE BEFORE

This also wasn't the first shooting at this location.

In September 2024, three people were shot inside the same Brighton Park Thorntons, including two employees, after armed suspects chased another man into the store and continued firing.

That history raises another concern for people who work overnight shifts and customers who depend on 24-hour businesses.

Stopping for gas shouldn't feel dangerous.

Going inside for coffee shouldn't be dangerous.

Working behind the counter shouldn't mean wondering whether you're going to make it through your shift.

A 36-year-old man reportedly saw something suspicious and tried to alert another person. His family is now planning life without him.

That's heartbreaking.

And we're tired of seeing families have to bury somebody because another person decided a gun belonged in a situation where it never needed to be fired.

As of the latest reports, no arrests have been announced, and Chicago Police Area One detectives are investigating.
